This choice: Amanda plays Mom and sees what happens • Go Back...Chapter #9Amanda plays Mom and sees what happens by: Michelle Amanda got back to work with a smile. She loved gossiping with her female coworkers during lunch. It was a nice feeling to be included in the cool crowd again. She giggled knowing she owed her climbing social status all to her husband. Had Kyle not turned himself into a little girl, nobody would have overheard her phone conversation and assumed she had a daughter. The women at work thought she was just like them. A working mother.
The HR secretary (Liz) approached Amanda's desk with a friendly smile. It was nice to be looked at without getting the standard eye roll from another female employee. Liz had a pile of paperwork as Amanda explained, "Jason just left for a weekend getaway which means I can't get the CEO's signature until Monday."
Liz explained, "These aren't for Jason. They are for you to fill out. We should have taken care of this new-hire paperwork sooner. But the way Jason put you to work right away, there wasn't any time in your schedule to get it done. Before we get down to business, we need to cover more important issues. Like...where did you get that skirt? It's really cute!"
Amanda was flattered. It was the first compliment she'd gotten from another woman at work. For the next few minutes, she explained where she acquired the skirt and other professional looking wardrobe items. Liz exchanged suggestions on where she got her clothes. Amanda loved how they were bonding like friends talking about fashion and shopping. Eventually, Liz seemed as if she was going to explain the HR paperwork that needed to be signed. But instead, she grabbed her phone and giggled, "I gotta show you this cute pic I took last night. From one mom to another, I know you'll appreciate it." Amanda looked at her screen to see a toddler sitting at a high chair with spaghettios all over her face. Liz sighed, "I just got Evelyn that adorable dress and the first meal she eats she completely ruined it."
Amanda replied with a lie, "Awww. Evelyn is so cute! I have tons of pics of Kylie when she was that age and ate with her hands. She was always covered head to toe in food."
Liz giggled, "Bath time last night took extra long getting all that food out of her hair. I can't wait for the terrible twos to be over with. Show me a pic of Kylie. I'd love to see what she looks like. I'm sure your daughter is totally adorable."
Amanda panicked. She didn't have any pictures of Kylie on her phone. Her husband only turned himself into a little girl this morning. She suddenly remembered the pic that her sister sent earlier of Kylie playing dress up. She pulled it up quickly and showed it to her new friend. {link: https://images-wixmp-ed30a86b8c4ca887773...}
Liz sighed, "OMG! Kylie is sooooo cute. I love that pretty princess dress!"
Amanda hoped to dodge showing any more pictures that didn't exist yet, "Thanks. So...about that paperwork you wanted me to sign?"
Liz explained, "These forms are really difficult to follow. I took the liberty of filling out the stuff I knew about your personal information. I just need some basic info about your daughter. By the way...I totally love her name. You don't hear parents naming their daughters after their Dad very often. I'm sure Kyle wanted a boy to pass his name to so he could call him junior. Anyways...I'll fill the form out as you answer. So...What's Kylie's middle name?" Liz had her head down and a pen ready to write.
Amanda paused. Kylie didn't technically have a middle name...yet. She didn't want to sound like a terrible mother who didn't know simple details about her daughter. Since Kyle's real middle name was Terrance, she came up with something similar, "...It's Theresa.."
Liz then asked, "Okay, what's her birth date?"
Amanda gulped. She pretended to cough while buying time. Since she told everybody Kylie just turned 4, she had to do some quick math to figure out what year she would have been born. She used a date from last week minus the appropriate years and managed to reply fast enough so Liz didn't think anything of it."
For a moment, the questions got easier. It was easy to reply Kylie's hair and eye color. She stumbled again when asked what Doctor and Dentist Kylie went to. Luckily, she overheard the other women gabbing during lunch about their own kids. She was able to recall a pediatric clinic and a doctor's name another woman was talking about. She was taken off guard when Liz asked what Kylie's social security number was. Liz got this reaction frequently by parents and explained, "I know you probably don't have that info with you. It's not required to enroll anyways. You can always submit that later." She handed the form to Amanda and said, "Sign the bottom here."
Amanda signed her name without paying attention to what the form was for. Liz was pleased the truant paperwork was finally finished, "Good. I'll send this through immediately so your daughter is added to your health insurance by Monday."
Amanda's eyes got wide. She didn't realize she just signed an application for health insurance. She wondered why Kyle's name wasn't included? She'd always covered his medical insurance in the past because his company's plan was terrible. Whatever she just signed only had herself and her fake daughter's info.
Liz sensed the confusion and explained, "Don't worry. You were automatically enrolled upon employment. I just needed your family's information so they have coverage too. Given your divorce is almost finalized...I didn't include your...SOON TO BE....ex-husband's information. Kids are easy to add. But it can take months for the HMO to process significant others. By then you won't be married to Kyle anymore. Plus, that jerk can find his own health insurance. I know what you are going through. My ex has tried to leach off me for years after our marriage was over. Had I known how childish my ex-husband would act, I would have never married him."
Amanda bit her lip wanting to reply, "At least your ex-husband isn't ACTUALLY a child..." She still had no idea why Kyle turned himself into a little girl? She didn't know if it was on purpose or if it was an accident. A few perks seemed to fall into place with the sudden realignment of her family situation. Having a daughter to talk about instantly made Amanda a social butterfly. She was suddenly in the cool crowd among the other women who had kids. Kyle's accident/on-purpose transformation into Kylie also was affecting Lauren's livelyhood. Now that Kylie might be around for awhile, Lauren felt obligated to renew her daycare license. Although she didn't know quite yet, Lauren had multiple Moms who were about to call and ask for an interview so their children could attend her at-home daycare. Amanda still didn't know what to do? Kyle's transformation into 'Kylie' instantly escalated her social life. Lauren's life was about to change with a successful child care business. Amanda wondered if her husband knew this would happen if he turned himself into a kid? After all, Kyle had the next 3 weeks off because his company was remodeling the building. Maybe this was Kyle's way of getting his wife and sister-in-law's life back together?
Amanda had no choice but to nervously smile and thank Liz for her help. Amanda sent off a quick text to her sister explaining, "OMG. I just enrolled Kylie onto my healthcare plan??!!"
Lauren promptly replied, "Good. I need Kylie's vaccination records and most recent physical. It's required for each child in my home daycare in order to keep my license."
Amanda replied, "How am I supposed to get fake records like that?"
Lauren replied, "Don't fake it. I need legitimate documents in case an inspector comes by. Schedule her for a check-up and shots. I'll give you the daycare form that her pediatrician needs to fill out when you pick up your daughter today. By the way...I charge $1 per minute after your child isn't picked up by 6pm."
Amanda was a bit offended that her own sister was going to charge her extra fees if she didn't pick up Kylie on time. She fired off a text, 'How about we negotiate a late fee with trading shapeshifting medallion privileges?"
Lauren replied excited to use the medallion, 'Sounds fair to me! In that case, pick up Kylie whenever you want!"
Amanda smirked. Her sister was right. After accidentally enrolling her husband on her health insurance plan as her daughter, she could bring Kylie to the doctor whenever she wanted.
Amanda shook her head wondering what she was going to do? Maybe this was all a joke and Kyle was pretending to be a little girl? Maybe it was real and her husband had no recollection of ever being a man? If the latter was true, that meant Amanda could go to ladies night with her new friends this weekend and pretend to be single again. All was fair when it came to the medallion. As long as they were in different bodies, they could experiment as much as they wanted to. Amanda figured the rule applied since Kyle wasn't in his normal body. He was ignorantly running around as a 4 year old whether he knew it or not. indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
