Tommy patrolled the cement in his hard soled shoes. The clacking echoing in the empty atmosphere. Late shift could be eerie but it paid better. The silence and loneliness didn’t bother him. It left him with his thoughts. With the shapeshifting medallion he could become a cop above all others. Perception to notice evidence of all crimes. The expertise to analyse evidence at scenes. With all of the martial skills to take down suspects. He need to add those abilities to himself when he next got home. A creak of a floor board caught his attention. Flipping his switch to alert mode. Masking his approach to the noise with careful steps. A flashlight illuminating in office a dead give away. Reaching for his radio a blow struck him to knocking him to the ground. Twisting his head to see his attacker his eyes widening in surprise before blacking out.
His eyes fluttering awake in a hospital room. The ache in his head came in throbbing pangs. A nurse came in at his spiking vitals. An administration of a sedative to ease any discomfort left him loopy for the detective that came in to ask questions. The police officer soon left suspecting that Anubis god of the underworld wasn’t responsible for the attack. He’d come back when the sedative wore off.
Joe arriving later as Tommy’s emergency contact alerting the other roommates of his state. Tommy broke from his medically induced slumber with his friend next to him. “You won’t believe it Joe but I could of sworn that a person with a dog head knocked me out.”
Joe considered for a minute, “You sure it isn’t trauma or medication?”
“It felt and appeared real.”
“Not a mask?”
“I didn’t see a seam.” Tommy responded.
Joe took a minute to consider what he heard, “Most likely it is a combination of the drugs or trauma. But you are normally a person who doesn’t exaggerate or prone to fantasy. The cops would never believe that story unless we demonstrated the shaeshifting medallion. Letting authorities know about it could lead to bad places. My suggestion is you say reflecting on it you think the person was wearing a dog mask.”
“You think that I could of seen it?” Tommy asked.
“We know that the medallion exists. Why not other items and creatures that defy conventional understanding? There is another possibility that you have not considered though. It could have been one of us that did it.” Joe said in a concerned tone.
The idea of one his friends doing it hadn’t occurred to Tommy. “Why would one of you do this to me?”
“Simple, wanting something in the warehouse you work. You strike us all as being a straight arrow unable to be bribed. When caught they lashed out.” Joe said.
Tommy looked to Joe, “You could have done it.”
Joe shrugged his shoulders, “Unlikely. I told you to suspect the other roommates. The other fact is that I would’ve made myself invisible with a zone silence around me and night vision so you would never notice me. Mark and Brad lack as much imagination. My personal vote is that it would be a stranger. But I will help you investigate until we know for sure.”
Tommy was about to thank Joe when he felt a tingle about his body. His body felt like cloth being pulled taut. Joe observing with a clinical stare at the transforming. Flesh building out of his pectorals into small but present breasts. Body curving into feminine lines. During it all Tommy felt a paralysis holding hims in place. As if a clay model remolded under the direction of a mysterious sculptor. Tommy’s mind spinning as reality shifted along with it.
Standing at the bedside an unfamiliar woman smiled, “I am so glad that you are alright Tammy. Is this your boyfriend?”
Joe caught himself before Tommy did. Offering a handshake, “Only her friend Joe, checking to make sure she is okay.”
The friend shook it saying, “I am glad she has someone else looking out for her. My name is Hebe.” Turning to face Tommy, “No more walking alone at night. I have a thousand things to do today but call me if you need anything.” Tommy nodded unsure of what to say. Watching the unknown woman leave the room.
Joe spoke first, “I think it is safe to say you didn’t imagine it all. I think reality altered because of what was done to you. I might be immune to it because of using the medallion or being close to you at the time of the shift. We should begin this investigation in earnest to stop further transformations.”
“You think there will be more?”
“Safest to operate under that belief. Lets see if we can get you release and then check how far reality has altered.” Joe said.
