The Geese go to the Martell BeastMaster

    by: Jim Author IconMail Icon
The geese disappeared in the mist, but were guided by an inner directional sense. They flew south by southwest for a few hours, before finding themselves near the BeastMaster’s home. Spying the telltale signs of the BeastMaster. They knew they were close when predators and prey were seen roaming fields side by side. Normally aggressive predators acted as meek as sheep, yet none appeared hungry. Surely some magic beside the BeastMasters ability to control the beasts was at work!

Finally they spied a small wood cabin that they innately knew belonged to the BeastMaster. As they landed, he emerged from inside and looked at them with a smile on his face.

“I’ve been expecting you my friends. What causes you to visit me in such a rush?”

“BeastMaster, we beseech thee, please kind sir! As geese, the wise ones of the land will not listen to our advice. We are cut off before we can complete a sentence, mocked to our faces. If only we can be wise like you, or human even. We have heard you know magic, by chance is there a spell you can cast that will allow us to be listened to?”

“My friends, come inside, let’s sit and talk a little, and decide exactly what it is you wish.”

The BeastMaster led them inside his spacious cabin. It had looked so small from the air, and while talking outside, but once inside it was a veritable castle! Once they were all seated comfortably, the BeastMaster asked, “Now, exactly what would you like of me? Yes, I can do many things to help you, and will do so gladly.”

BeastMaster couldn’t help but smile as the geese talked among themselves. Finally, the elder shushed the rest and turned to him and said, “Sire, if it’s not asking too much, we’d like to be wise beyond years, and human.”

He rubbed his chin as he looked at them and said, “I can do one or the other, but I cannot make you wise, and human. You have to choose which you will be.”

Once again the geese talked amongst themselves, and finally the elder again addressed BeastMaster. “We would like to be human. We think that only by being human will people listen to us. Thank you for this boon BeastMaster!”

“It is done then, sleep well tonight, for tomorrow you wake as seven humans. All female, sisters. I name you,” he pointed at each one as he said their names, “Asterope, Merope, Electra, Maia, Taygeta, Celaeno, and Alcyone.”

The next morning, seven stunningly beautiful women stood before BeastMaster. He looked at them, and knew he had done the best he could, but still, something was not quite right. It was not until Merope, who had been the elder spoke, that he realized what was wrong.

“Oh girls, look at us! Let’s get going! We have a lot of shopping to do, and a short time to get it done!”

“Merope, not so fast, you’re going to gag me with a spoon if you keep this up!”

Like the true valley girls he had created, the group turned and left, never thanking him for the ‘boon’ he had granted them. As they disappeared from sight, he couldn’t help but think to himself, ‘I made them human, but they still have bird brains.’
