Chapter #6

Turn around and take your chances

    by: Osirantinous Author IconMail Icon
Sabrina thought long and hard about her decision, or as long and as hard as a 6-year-old might be expected to think about these things. She had been saved from the forest and the wolf once, and had been told several times not to go into the wood. Hadn't she learned why she'd been told that? That wolf had been terrifying.

I'm on the edge of the forest, she thought. I can see my house. Sabrina twisted to look over her shoulder to make sure of that fact. Yes, she could see her house, the light shining like a safety beacon in her bedroom window. She could even just make out Bo with his paws up on the sill. Surely, there can't be any danger to me here. I'm not in the woods.

A light suddenly flashed in front of Sabrina's face and she let out a shriek.

'Well?' the fairy asked, impatiently, stamping a foot in the air. 'Are you coming or not?'

'Um, I...' Sabrina took a breath. 'Celine told me to stay out of the woods, and Bo... he didn't want me to come. I'm gonna go home.'

'You're what?' Charie demanded, her glow brightening like a flame with more oxygen.

Sabrina drew up. She might have been just six, but she was bigger than the fairy. 'I'm going home,' she said. 'I can't come with you tonight, Charie.'

'Celine's in trouble,' the fairy said softly. 'Would you really...'

'I don't believe you.' Sabrina looked down her nose at the fairy. How amazingly easy it was to forget or simply ignore the fact that she had disobeyed her father to follow Charie not too many minutes ago. She shivered, realising she was out here in her pink pyjamas. 'It's too dark in there anyway,' she added. 'I'd lose you.'

'I promised to keep you safe,' the fairy wheedled, realising the child was about to ruin the game.

Sabrina shook her head and backed away. 'I'm going now. If you want me to follow, come back at lunchtime.'

Sabrina turned on her heel and then sprinted for the house as if her life depended upon it. Behind her Charie flared bright green and her wings momentarily frizzled to black smokey feathers. The girl didn't see this transformation and even if she'd turned instantly, the fairy was far quicker. Charie may have lost her tonight but her guise was still holding up and she might just come back tomorrow at lunchtime. She'd be hungry then, anyway.

Charie watched the child fleeing toward the house like a banshee was after her, and then come to a skidding halt at the base of the tree outside her bedroom window. Would the girl try to climb it? She watched Sabrina looking up at the tree, saw the blasted dog hanging over the sill, sniffing the wind. The tree was climable - downward but not up, not easily anyway.

What would Sabrina do?

You have the following choices:

1. Attempt to climb to keep the disobedience secret?

2. Does she knock on the front door? Does it open?
