Hannah pulls her fine, leather gloves from her hands, strides to an ornate, ebony dresser which stand against the wall on the left of the large oak panelled hall, and flings her gloves into one of the drawers. She throws her coat over the back of a carved chair beside the cupboard, then sits on it and leans forward to unfasten her riding boots.

"Melza! Where the hell are you?" Her voice echoes around the high ceiling of the hallway as she struggles to remove the boots. "Melza! She's never around when you want her." Hannah continues to unfasten her boots.

An wizened old woman hobbles from a dark passageway at the back of the hall. Hannah looks up from her task. The old woman stops before her and curtseys.

"Welcome home, Queen Hannah!" Her voice wavers when she sees the scowl on the face of her mistress. "Melza is out on an errand for the steward, M'am. Perhaps I can help you with your boots." She bends painstakingly toward Hannah, who pushes her away.

"Leave it, Granny Peden. I can manage them myself." The old woman straightens up and steps back a few paces. "Tell Spender that I want to see him immediately in the Upper Chamber." Granny Peden curtseys once more.

"I'll find him and send him to you right away, M'am." She hobbles off towards the passageway, muttering under her breath, then turns back. "He only returned an hour ago, and is having a bite to eat in the kitchen." She resumes her laboured progress and disappears back the way she came.

Hannah finally succeeds in removing her boots and throws them fitfully into one of the cupboards of the dresser, slips her feet gratefully into a pair of soft leather shoes which she pulls from under the chair, then leans back and glances round the hall. A fire burns in a huge inglenook in the back wall. To the right of it, a wide staircase curves upward towards a long landing which has three large doorways along the back edge of it.

She sighs as she remembers her reduced circumstances. She is Queen in name only. But that will change if her plans come to fruition. Then she will no longer have to hide away in this god forsaken castle on the crags in the foothills of the Mystic Mountains.

Her eyes sweep round the walls, which are lined with torches burning in wrought iron wall sconces. She leaps to her feet, paces to the fire and stands warming herself for a few moments before climbing the stairs and entering the larger of the three doors, the middle one on the landing, pulling the door closed behind her.

A few moments later, a commotion breaks out form the corridor that Granny Peden had disappeared through. A tall, well built man bursts from its end closely followed by Granny Peden, brandishing a rolling pin.

Spender dodges her blows easily and skips up the staircase, laughing. Granny turns, then returns from whence she came, casting curses over her shoulder as she goes.

Spender pauses at the top of the stairs and straightens his jacket before walking jauntily to the middle door.
