Hawkeye Pierce's Classic Tale
Chapter One: The Trial of Alan Samuels by Hawkeye Pierce and edited by Caesar Roberto
The sound of an alarm clock woke Alan Samuels from his slumber; causing him to slowly role over and turn off the alarm. As he turned off the alarm, he awoke the girl sleeping in the bed next to him.
The girl opened her eyes and looked at Alan; with sleep in her eyes. “What time is it?”
“It’s 8:30; we should hurry if we don’t want to be late for the field trip.” Sitting up in bed, Alan said, “Come on, Megan; you know how Dr. Peterson is about late students.”
“Okay fine; I’ll shower first.” Kissing Alan on the lips, Megan said, “Hopefully your roommates who think they’re god’s gift to women are already gone.”
“Leave them be, Meg; they’re good guys.”
“No they’re not good guys, Alan; when will you realize that?” sitting up in bed, Megan said, “I’ve seen the looks they give me when I leave here; plus their choice in women leaves much to be desired.”
“So they bring sluts home every so often; where’s the harm in that?”
“I can’t keep having this argument with you all the time.” Frustrated, Megan said, “If the cops come after them; they’ll probably come after you as an accessory to their crimes.

Even as Alan walked with Megan to his car, he did understand Megan’s misgivings about his roommates. They have been getting worse with their actions towards girls; he had even heard rumors on campus of the two of them placing cameras in various places to get video of girls. He was getting tired of defending them; if he could find another place to live, he would leave today. As Alan got into the car with Megan, he turned to her and said, “I wonder how interesting this field trip is going to be.”
“I don’t know; you’re a chemical engineering major and I'm a biology engineering major studying biochemistry, so I think going to a chemical production plant should be a fun experience.”
“Says the person whose father is in charge of safety and compliance at the plant.”
“So my dad’s vice president, big deal.” Chuckling Meagan said, “Need I remind you that once we graduate; you’re pretty much guaranteed a job.”
The tour of the company was just as boring as Alan had thought it would be; since it was primarily a tour of the inner workings of the company. He did enjoy seeing the rooms where the chemicals were produced. As the tour guide stopped outside a closed door; he turned to the group and said, “We’re about to enter a room where we hold certain acids that would have disasterous consequences if you’re exposed.” Pausing, he said, “So please be careful.”
The class followed the guide into the room; with Alan and Megan taking up the rear. As they walked along a catwalk over vats of acid, Megan said, “Daddy says these vats in this room are used to destroy volatile chemicals.”
“Why are they being destroyed?”
“Because they’re actually byproducts of the production process.” Pausing, Megan said, “They can’t be used for anything; so they’re destroyed.”
As the group stopped to look at one of the vats below them, Brian leaned up against a railing to get a closer look. He was looking at a half-empty vat when the railing suddenly gave way; and he fell into the vat below. The last thing he remembered before blacking out was tremendous pain and Megan’s terrified screams as people scrambled to help him.
