Claudine thought to herself for a moment before nodding. "I may as well." She stated simply. Avery took several large, ponderous steps back to allow the unicorn in. As Claudine entered, she took notice of Marc almost immediately.
Claudine raised a brow in surprise. "This is your helper, I presume?"
"Yep," Avery said, closing the door. "His name's Marc. We were just talking before you came."
"I see." Claudine looked down her nose at the young man before her before extending her hand in greeting.
Marc was caught off guard for a second before taking the hand graciously. "Nice to meet you, Claudine."
"A pleasure as well, Marc. How is dear Avery treating you?"
Marc took a moment before answering. "Pretty well. I haven't been put through a wall yet."
Avery, who had returned to the bench press and her routine, snorted. "Well, you haven't given a real reason to, buddy."
Claudine sniffed and took a seat on a nearby chair. "Obviously, you have to deal with all that ill-tempered riffraff in the lower divisions. You'll come to find that Avery and myself are of a more reasonable sort."
Avery have a grunt in affirmation. "Yep. Marc, Claudine here's one of the most sensible fighters in the entire ASL. She might not be as big a some and she's a bit of a princess, but she got skills."
Claudine puffed out her chest at the praise and smirked. "If the entire ASL worked even as half as hard as you or I, there wouldn't nearly as many demotions."
Avery just laughed. For his part, Marc was really surprised. Claudine and Avery really got along despite being so different. It was obvious they had some sort history with each each other.
"You two really respect each other." Marc stated, almost to himself. He continued when both turned to look at him. "I mean, in all my time here, I've never seen two fighters who've really gotten along."
The two fighters turned to each other before looking back at Marc.
Claudine nodded. "Despite being rough around the edges, Avery is a very dedicated fighter and an honorable opponent. We've had several matches and I found myself satisfied, despite my losses to her."
Avery smiled. "Claudine's a little stiff but she's real smart and knows here way 'round a scrap. I might've beaten her, but few can give me fight like she can. That and she don't go eatin' everyone in sight like some." Avery shook her head in what Marc guessed was disapproval. "She ain't like Charla or Amaya."
Claudine visibly repressed a shiver. "Those two gluttons are a disgrace!" She spat. "All they do is eat any competitor they can get their mouths around! They just get rid of thin out the ranks and destroy potential fighters before they even get going just so that can get fatter!"
Marc nodded. Even, in his short time, he had heard about those names more than a few times. Amaya and Charla were feared by just about all in the lower divisions. Everyone once in awhile some stupid newbie would challenge or accept a challenge from one from them to a Survival match and be gulped down for their arrogance.
Claudine sighed. "But bring those two up does raise a kind of point." She turned to Avery, who her routine to regard the unicorn. "I've been thinking of trying something new for my fighting style."
Avery set the barbell back, giving Claudine her full attention. "Go on." She urged, interest visible.
"Despite my skill," Claudine started, "I've noticed I have issues with large opponents like yourself. But I really don't know what I should do. I am simply too small to take full advantage of any plans I make. You know I avoid those Survival matches so that I don't turn into some type of blimp and ruin what has brought and kept me in the Gold Division. But I'm wondering if you should bulk up and modify my approaches fighting. What do you think?"
Marc looked to Avery who rested her beak on her fist in concentration. After several moments. Avery spoke up. indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
