A distant noise echoed around Trucy. She spun around. Far off in the distance, her vision was blocked by the couch, but above that, she could see part of what was happening. The door was opening.
She spotted a familiar face over the back side of the couch. Maya Fey, her father's best friend and former assistant. Trucy and Pearl had been conspiring for years to get Maya to just marry Phoenix already, and even though they hadn't succeeded yet, Trucy loved every minute she'd ever spent with Maya.
If Maya was here, Pearl was, too. Trucy couldn't see her friend yet. Pearl was extremely short, so she was probably just out of view behind the couch from this skewed angle.
Trucy didn't know what to do. She stood in place on the edge of one hat, still clutching the other. She heard distant rumbles as Maya and Pearl entered the little office. They were so tall...
Trucy was a fairly capable math student. She thought about the measurements of her specially-made hats. Looking at them now, she could only guess at her new height, but she pegged it to be somewhere in the ballpark of millimetres. Not good. Even most bugs would be bigger than she was now.
She heard Pearl call out. She thought it was her name, but the way the voice echoed around, it was hard to tell.
