Roy's shift was surprisingly uninteresting. After all, he was still a Burger Bonanza employee, and life as one Burger Bonanza employee wasn't much different than life as another. Roy had to remember to respond to Jessica's name instead of his own, but that was about it. He spent five hours flipping burgers and assembling sandwiches, frying potatoes and mixing salads, and at the end of the shift, he didn't any particular insight about Jessica or what it meant to live as a woman. All he really learned was that thong underwear was really uncomfortable, brastraps pinched, and Malcolm Schmidt, the pimply sixteen-year-old who'd started a week ago, was completely incapable of speaking to a pretty girl.
Indeed, the strangest part of the day was seeing Jessica run around pretending to be him. Jessica, as Roy, was working the counter, while Roy, as Jessica, had been assigned to work in the kitchen, which means the two of them weren't interacting directly most of the time. But Roy could see Jessica, and he could hear her from here... and seeing her act and speak like a man, seeing her beautiful hair cut short like a man's... it wasn't exactly a turn-on. Roy still found her incredibly attractive to look at... but it was disconcerting to hear her and to watch her move.
"You hot on Milford?" said Meredith, a middle-aged woman who usually worked the drive-through, as she passed Roy at one point.
"Huh?" Roy said, a little startled.
"Roy," Meredith said. "I keep catching you staring at him. You got a thing for him?"
"Oh, uh, no," Roy said, blushing. He felt completely flustered.
"Surrrre," Meredith said, and laughed as she walked away.
Roy tried not to look at Jessica after that. But he could still hear her, speaking with flat, masculine inflections, and it was bizarre.
When Jessica's five-hour shift was over, Roy gratefully stopped by the locker where he'd stashed Jessica's purse and clothing and ran to the women's room. Ducking into a stall again, he quickly changed out of the Burger Bonanza uniform and into Jessica's street clothes. The jeans took a little effort to squeeze into, but otherwise, Roy didn't have much trouble with the clothing... though he was sure it would be a different story when he had to wrestle with her bra later on. At last, flashing a smile at Jessica's sexy reflection, he left the restroom and headed out to the parking lot.
Roy had watched Jessica cross the parking lot enough times to know which car was hers: she drove the aging red sedan which was currently parked behind the dumpster. It was the perfect car for a Burger Bonanza employee, especially one who was still in high school: boxy, practical, and spotted with rust. Taking Jessica's keys from her purse, Roy jumped inside.
He took a deep breath. He was alone, finally, and free to explore Jessica's life. He'd been itching to get to the end of Jessica's shift; few five-hour shifts had felt as obnoxiously long as his had today. Reaching up, Roy folded down the visor mirror and stared in wonder at Jessica's reflection. "Hi, sexy," he said, and watched in amazement as Jessica's lips mirrored his words. He tried to imitate Jessica's smile... the broad, sweet, cheerful smile that had enchanted Roy for two years now. His heart fluttered as he watched Jessica's reflection grin. "I can't believe it," he whispered as he stared in worshipful awe.
Closing the mirror, Roy buckled his seat belt. He moved the seat back a little bit and adjusted the rear and side mirrors... it took a lot of adjusting, as Roy was almost a full foot taller than Jessica. Once he was satisfied, he put the keys in the ignition and started up Jessica's car. As he pulled out of the parking lot and onto the street, Roy smiled in anticipation.
