Chapter #19

Miriel grew a second head.

The pain in Miriel’s head grew even more intense, and soon her neck and shoulders started aching as well. Her vision grew blurry as the pain grew even stronger. Somehow, Miriel was able to stay standing, even though she felt like her head, neck and shoulders were on fire. After about a minute, the pain began to subside, and started to regain sensation in her head and shoulders as her vision began to clear. As her vision came into focus, Miriel realised that she couldn’t feel her glasses on her face… except she could also feel her glasses resting on her nose. She also felt as if her right ear was brushing up against something, even though it wasn’t, and she had a similar feeling with her left ear.

“Miriel?” Anna asked quietly. “Are you alright?”

“Yes,” said Miriel. “I believe so.” Miriel’s voice sounded strange in her ears. It sounded as if her voice had an instant echo. Miriel cleared her throat and looked at Anna. “Why are you staring at me like that?”

“Here, you’d better see for yourself,” said Anna, taking Miriel’s hand and leading her over to a mirror. Miriel gasped when she saw herself in the mirror. Miriel reached up with her hands, and placed her hands on her outer left and outer right cheeks. Unless she was hallucinating, which was unlikely, Miriel now had two heads. Her left head was wearing her glasses and hat, while her right head was bare.

“My goodness,” said Miriel, both of her mouths speaking in unison as she blinked with four eyes. “Well, it would seem that particular potion causes the growth of a second head.”

“So... um, is that, you know, second head, are you, well, are you, er, two people or one?” said Anna, stammering nervously.

“I believe I am a single person, rather than a pair of conjoined twins,” said Miriel. She held her right hand up to her right jaw and held her right mouth shut as she opened her left mouth a few times, trying to get better control over her new head.

“I guess they weren’t kidding about doubling your brains,” said Anna. “You literally have two brains now.”

“A most unusual development. However, it is not unpleasant,” Miriel said, saying the first sentence with her left mouth and the second sentence with her right mouth. Miriel turned to look at Anna. “Do you have my glasses in stock?” Miriel asked.

“Uh, yeah, I think I’ve got a few pairs,” said Anna. “Why?”

“My glasses were not duplicated when my second head was formed,” said Miriel with her left head. “Thus, I require a second pair of glasses for my new eyes,” she said with her right head.

“Oh, okay,” said Anna. “Yeah, I’ll go grab a pair. Be right back.”

While Anna walked over to another corner of the storeroom to pick out a pair of glasses, Miriel stayed in front of the mirror. She brought her hands up to her necks, and began running her hands against the inner right and left sides of her necks, enjoying the strange new sensations.

“Here you go,” said Anna, walking up to her. “One pair of glasses, free of charge.”

“My thanks,” said Miriel, unfolding the glasses and slipping them onto her right head. With her second pair of glasses on, her vision cleared up completely.

“So, how does it feel?” Anna asked. “Having two heads, I mean.”

“As I said, it is not unpleasant, though the initial transformation was quite excruciating,” Miriel said with her left mouth. “However, I may need some time to fully adjust to my new body.”

“If you need to take a break, that’s fine,” said Anna. “I’m sure all these tomes and potions can wait until tomorrow. If you’re still interested in testing them, that is.”

“Of course I am still interested,” said Miriel. “I must learn how this magic works, and how to replicate it.”

“That’s the spirit!” said Anna. “So, do you want to keep testing now, or wait until tomorrow?”
