Phoenix was in his office going over case files one more time before heading over to the courthouse for a trial. His friend Larry had gotten into trouble again and even though the charges weren't serious, Phoenix figured he couldn't count on Larry to not make it harder than it had to be. If anyone could go from petty larceny to contempt of court in under 60 seconds, it'd be him.
Satisfied with the details, he looked to his watch and realized that his cab would be there soon. He opened the door of the agency but realized that a small cardboard package was sitting at his feet. "Hmm? It's way too early for mail..." he examined it for a second, but looked up to see his ride had pulled up. "I'll read it on the way," he decided as he boarded the car.
---
As Phoenix sat in the back, he forewent small talk to read over the instructions, telling the driver he was just reviewing case files. 'Body swap, possession, shape-shifting? Would be great if it was real, but it all sounds kooky.' He had to admit though it'd make the trial much simpler if he could become the judge, or have his assistant take over the prosecutor.
"Hey Nick! Took you long enough," speak of the devil, Phoenix's assistant Maya was impatiently waiting for him in the lobby. Larry was sitting in the corner, seemingly inconsolable.
"Sorry Maya, had to look over the case files one more time," he replied. "Have you gotten anything out of Larry."
Maya rolled her eyes, "hardly. I think his girlfriend broke up with him again? He's being difficult, and he wasn't even accused of murder this time!"
"Well, do we know who the prosecutor is?" Phoenix asked.
"I haven't seen them with my own eyes, but I'm pretty sure I heard a whip crack outside the door," Maya responded with clasped hands. "You know what that means, don't you?"
'Oh lord, not Franziska,' Phoenix groaned internally. She'd do whatever it takes to get a guilty verdict, no matter petty the trial. He could only guess she was coaching witnesses right now. 'But I bet if I had someone on the inside, it'd be a lot easier...'
"What'cha thinking about Nick? C'mon, we're partners! Don't hold out."
Phoenix reached towards his pocket, considering sharing the remote with Maya (and maybe Larry), but there was always the risk it wouldn't work and he'd look 'foolish' as Von Karma might put it. If he tried one of the functions himself, like possession, there'd certainly be no risk, but it might pay off in the long run to have other people informed about it too.
"Mr. Wright, the prosecution says you have two minutes," a beleaguered and bruised guard informed him from a crack in the door. "Please don't make her angrier."
"C'mon Phoenix! Show me what you got! Is it some sort of smoking gun? I want to know!" Maya shouted.
Phoenix figured that he may as well test the device now, so he decided to...
