Chapter #7

Alice Ignores it All and Just Wants to Study

by: Bobo the Hobo Author IconMail Icon
As amazing and wonderful and awe-inspiring as a miracle cure like the Yeng-Huan pill promised to be, it paled in comparison to the demands of actual college.

Not to knock Daven’s Port Community College or anything, but ASU was a real step up. Alice had never had to work so hard to stay caught up with her classes, and she went to one of the most prestigious schools in America. The professors here were crazy, and they all expected her to treat their class like it was her number one priority! What’s that? She wanted to go out and do something with Zack? Nope—she had the History of American Fashion to brush up on. Want to go hang with some classmates? Better be a study session, ‘cuz she had a Fashion Design course that required her to know why everything looked the way it did. Grab a bite to eat? Nope—Biology!

So, forgive her if she fell a little slack on the press. Buzzfeed was atwitter about Dr. Huan’s miracle cure, and it had been making rounds in social media, but who had the time to glance through Facebook when there were papers to write?

In fact, if it hadn’t come up in Mrs. Wallace’s English course (why did she even need English? She was a Fashion Design major!) Alice would have forgotten all about it.

Dr. Haun’s miracle pill had become something of a controversy, on campus and in the rest of the country it seemed. Most were skeptical of her claims, citing the fact that it made its debut on daytime television of all things and Dr. Huan’s controversial theories regarding body mass and excess weight in general. However there was (apparently) a rather vocal and growing faction that took the opposite stance; one that saw the Yeng-Huan pill as a scientific breakthrough and hailed Dr. Huan as a medical messiah. Not only had she managed to map the human genome, she was planning on curing any ailments through her research, and making it available to the general public! If her hypothesis were correct (and so far, they were purportedly so) Dr. Huan’s research could very well change the world!

And then there was Alice, just struggling to keep up in Biology.

College was so friggin’ hard, she didn’t have time for any of this other extraneous stuff! Sure there were miracle pills and lots of speculation/accusations getting thrown around, but Alice needed to focus on surviving her first semester at ASU before she could worry about any hot-button political-slash-scientific issues…

Maybe this would all be resolved by Winter Break? Then she could catch up…

Because, as she stood right now, Alice had much more pressing matters to worry about. She was doing splendidly in her GenEd courses. She’d covered most of the material during her days at Buttercombe, and filled in the gaps at DPCC. But, for all her fervor for fashion, she was floundering in the higher leveled courses pertaining to her field of interest. There was a difference between being able to sew and being able to tell the professor why it should be sewed a certain way and who made the technique and what kind of material should be used… it was exhausting!

Which was why Alice had asked for a little help.

It wasn’t like Zack could help her study—Alice needed to pass these classes! So she’d been asking around campus for a tutor that could help her pass these stupid design courses, or at least help put her on the right track. She’d already flunked an exam (luckily her professor dropped the lowest test grade, but still!) and that meant she needed an A on this midterm.

Luckily for her, she’d found someone in her class who was willing to help her—free of charge!

As she sat in the cafeteria, her notebooks open, Alice awaited the arrival of her tutor.

While she had maintained a neutral standing in this whole Yeng-Huan debacle, her tutor certainly hadn’t. Alice really hoped that they could actually study and not have literature or facts or statistics shoved down her throat… the non-academic sort of those things, anyway.

Because her tutor was…
