To Carter's horror, the one store that sold his newer, bigger diapers had closed its doors due to poor business. Carter's mom was one of the only customers who shopped there, and as a result, Carter had no choice but to use the potty. Carter's mom thought it was about time he learned to use the potty as well; he was almost five years old. Carter was also a frequent target of mockery and scorn from bullies like Butch Ironhammer because he still wore diapers past the age of three.
