Chapter #6

Caught, Sticky-Handed!

by: Bobo the Hobo Author IconMail Icon
"Um, what do you think you're doing?"

Suddenly, before Brooke could even sneak one delicious bite of sweet delectable donut, the lights flipped on. She nearly dropped her sugary sweets right then and there as her heart skipped a beat. She fought the urge to whip around in surprise, managing only to look behind her abashedly.

Parker Black was standing right there in the doorway, her hand on her hips and this most curious bitchy look on her face. Her black eyebrows were piqued, her lids lowered as she took a wild guess to what exactly Brooke had been doing before she walked in. Her free hand sunk from the light switch as she sauntered inside.

"Uh... nothing?" Brooke offered sheepishly, her chubby cheeks bunching as she smiled, "I was just gonna... you know... grab a donut."

"More like grab all the donuts." Parker scoffed, "Like, for real? You really think you need all those?"

Brooke felt the embarassment in her chest turn to an impotent rage. Parker wasn't exactly the most sociable person, and already had a tendency to put her foot in her mouth. That, though, wasn't just her being aloof. That was her being a bitch. Parker had made it very clear how she felt about Brooke's weight during her internship, with aside jokes that grew less and less good natured until she was eventually hired on.

Even still, Brooke had to admit, she was being kind of a pig...

"Right." she agreed begrudgingly as she took one (just one!) from the box on the counter, "Whatever."

As Brooke shuffled away from the counter and took a seat at one of the tables, she heard Parker mutter something under her breath. God, she hated her. Everyone did.

Parker had been one of the last employees hired on full time by their old bosses, but nobody knew exactly what she brought to the table other than a big chest and a pretty face. She didn't do well with clients, she wasn't particularly sociable around the office, and when she was it was usually through snide, snobbish behavior better suited to Mean Girls than it was to an adult environment.

Given Parker's predisposition towards pointing out peoples' weight, Brooke was given an entirely different reason to dislike her...

She was glad she had made her time as an intern so difficult!

Brooke squashed one of the bench seats beneath her, she mostly kept her comments to herself. She whipped out her phone, and tried to forget about it with a little mindless scrolling down her Facebook feed. That is, until she looked back up, and saw that Parker hadn't even gotten a donut! She had made Brooke move and feel bad for no reason, when she still had plenty of room to use the coffee maker!

"You're not gonna get one?" Brooke asked flatly

"Gawd no, I wouldn't be caught dead eating those things." Parker scoffed, "Do you know how many empty calories are in just like, one of those?"

There was some silence as Parker actually looked Brooke up and down before continuing.

"Well, I guess you don't." she said, "But they're gross."

The silence between them grew stronger as they slowly went back to doing their own thing. Parker making her cup of coffee, Brooke trying to tolerate Parker's existence. There had always been some animosity between the two of them, but lately things had gotten to the point where Brooke just couldn't stand her coworker.
