The warm smile on Shantae's smile was enough to make you smile back.
"Thanks, (name), I really needed that. It's been awhile since I got a complement..." Shantae said, a little tear forming a little bit at the corner of her eyes. "I've defended Scuttle Town so much barely a thank you from outside my friends. Heck the last time I got a complement was..."
The smile dropped. Her eyes darted back and forth for a bit before simply staring ahead before she muttered, "...was last year, when Bolo complemented my new swimsuit, right before he recognized who I am..."
Her hand turned, making her hold you tightly in her fist. "All I've received since was insults from Risky Boots and teases from Rottytops..."
She then looked at you with a maniacal gleam in her eyes and a scary smile. "But you... You gave me a complement... Will you be my boyfriend, (NAME)?"
"You're scaring me, Shantae," You replied.
"Nonsense, I'm too cute to scare you," Shantae said back. In a fake-sweet tone, she said, "But I will if you don't answer my question."
"Shantae, please snap out of it," You replied. "Besides, we don't know anything about each other. We just met."
That seemed to get through to Shantae, as her creepy smile vanished. After pondering, she said, "You're right... "
You let out a relieved sigh, letting the worry leave you.
"So let's spend the day together!" Shantae said with a smile that was only half-creepy.
Now the worry came back.
She leaned you in closer and said, "I will do whatever it takes to win your heart... But don't worry, you already won mine."
Inwardly, you cursed the citizens of Sequin Land for driving Shantae to the brink, where a few complements had made her over-focus on you.
"But what about helping me get back to my normal size?" you asked.
"I will, if it will help make you my boyfriend," Shantae answered. "But for now..."
