You quickly decide against sneaking up on the giant mermaid and playing around with her body. You need to focus on getting help and figuring out what happened to you. And the best way to do that is to get this mermaid’s attention, because you won’t last long on your own. You just hope she’s friendly. You could wait and observe her to see if she can be trusted, but that would increase the risk that she’ll swim away before you have a chance to get her attention.
So you swim towards her as quickly as you can. The mermaid is currently swimming low to the sandy seafloor, slowly moving between the coral and seaweed. She seems to be searching for something, but you can’t guess what it is. Because she’s moving slowly and methodically, you’re able to catch up to her despite your small size.
You come up alongside her, marveling at her immense size. She’s bigger than a whale. You’re nervous to get her attention, but you know you need to do it. So you prepare to say something. You pause, wondering if you can actually speak underwater, but decide to give it a try.
“Hey!” you shout. To your surprise, you can talk perfectly fine, but some bubbles come out of your mouth when you do. You keep yelling: “Over here! Help!”
The mermaid stops. She looks over and gasps as soon as she spots you. She spins in the water, bringing her face close to you and staring with her wide blue eyes. You swim back a bit, startled.
“Oh my gosh!” she yells, making you wince from her loud voice. “You... you look like a human! Are you a real human? I’ve never seen one this close before, but—why are you so small? And how can you breathe here? I thought you guys breathed air!”
You take a moment to recover from her excited outburst, then reply, “I can’t answer any of that. I was asleep, and then I just woke up here in the ocean, and I was tiny and could breathe underwater.”
“That’s really weird... maybe you got cursed by the sea witch?” the mermaid suggests. “This sounds like something she would do—if the stories about her are true.”
You shrug. “Well, no matter how this happened to me... can you help me? I’m lost, and confused—and I’d be a lot safer with someone normal-sized, like you.”
“Oh, definitely!” the mermaid says, and you feel a weight lift off your shoulders. She continues, “You can stay with me—I’ll keep you safe, and hidden, and I’ll try to find out how to get you back to normal. Oh, and you can tell me all about the human world in the meantime!”
“Um... sure,” you say. Her strong admiration of the human world seems odd, but you let it slide. You thank her for helping you, and tell her your name.
“My name’s Ariel,” she says in response. She smiles sweetly and adds, “Nice to meet you!”
“Nice to meet you too,” you reply. You wonder what she’s planning to do next...
