Chapter #21

Surviving in Hueco Mundo

    by: _H_ Author IconMail Icon
I stood up with a groan, trying to figure out what just happened. Just a few moments ago I was walking down the street on the way back from the hair salon I worked at. And now, I found myself in the middle of some giant grey desert. Well, I think it’s a desert anyway. It feels more like I’m walking around on giant pebbles, not to mention the massive mountains of sand around me. I’d heard of deserts having big sand dunes before, but nothing of this scale!

Looking up at the sky I was greeted with nothing but darkness, save for a glowing white crescent moon and some clouds. I dug through my mind, trying to think of where I recognized this visual from. Then, it clicked. A while ago I had visited a doctor I was pretty well acquainted with. His house had tons of crazy artifacts, as well as novels that he told me were history books. Or at least, ones his people made a long time ago. One of them described a world in which human spirits roamed and another in which monsters did. I think the monsters were called… hollows? The man also told me he used to be a Quincy, apparently a race of magic humans or something.

Reaching into my pocket, I pulled out the artifact he gave me. It was a silver medallion with a 5 pointed cross. It did feel like it emanated some kind of power, but I wasn't sure if it actually had some magical energy or if it was just my mind making things up.

As I stumbled through the vast desert, the towering dunes of sand felt insurmountable. With each step I took it felt like I wasn’t getting any closer to the top. However, I persevered, eventually reaching the peak of one of these hills. What greeted me was an even larger expanse of sand, stretching forever onwards. Sighing, I tiredly sit down and take in the scenery.

The only objects of interest were massive black trees, each easily looking over 100 feet tall. The book I had read mentioned the ‘monster world’ being called Hueco Mundo, but everything here seemed much larger than what the book had described. After all, the trees were only supposed to be a few feet taller than an average human.

Just then, a thought entered my mind. What if this world wasn’t giant, but I had shrunk? It was the only explanation I could think of, since aside from the size difference this place perfectly matched the description of Hueco Mundo. But that still doesn’t explain how I got here. I’m not dead, or at least I think I’m not. However, an even worse thought entered my mind. Weren’t there supposed to be monstrous creatures here? There wasn’t too much in the book concerning hollows, but from the small snippets I read, they weren’t exactly friendly toward living things.

Suddenly, my heart raced as I saw something on the horizon. Massive white and grotesque figures were approaching, their silhouettes growing larger and more menacing with each step. I wasn’t sure how large they truly were considering the trees still dwarfed them in size, but at the very least they were monsters to me! Each one was over 3 times my size, I knew I didn’t stand a chance if they got to me. I tried to get up and run, but my exhaustion combined with the difficulty of traversing through the sand made it hard to go anywhere.

My breath caught in my throat as the hollows closed in on me, their disturbing forms and menacing growls coming ever closer. I had no way to defend myself, and panic started to set in. I knew I had to run, to hide, but where could I possibly go in this desolate landscape? I couldn't even see so much as a boulder to hide behind.

Soon enough, they were just a few paces away from me. Each one was visibly excited to get their hands on a human for the first time in ages, their faces snarling as their prey lay just before them. But before the Hollows could pounce on me, the ground began to rumble beneath my feet. The tremors grew more intense as I heard something booming behind me, causing even the Hollows to stumble and lose their footing. As the shaking reached its peak, I noticed a look of fear on the hollow's faces, directed behind me and looking at whatever was causing what felt like an earthquake. And then, with a sudden and devastating impact, a massive boot came crashing down upon the Hollows, obliterating them in an instant. An enormous shadow enveloped my minuscule body as the owner of said boot stood in front of me, both feet now on the sand.

I gazed up in awe and terror at the colossal figure that had unknowingly saved me. If I had thought the hollows were big, they were nothing compared to her. From my tiny point of view, she appeared to be easily over 80 feet tall. It was a massive woman, or at least, I assumed it was considering her figure.

I remained frozen in place, not sure what to do. Thankfully she had stopped moving, giving me a chance to get a good look at her and regain my bearings. She had her back facing me, so I couldn’t get a good view of most of her towering body. However, what I could see painted her as a somewhat… unique character. She had long, green hair that cascaded down her back in both a lightning-like and wavy pattern. Past that she had a rather slender and curvy body, covered up only by incredibly short white shorts and part of a white jacket that seemed to only cover up her chest. Whoever she was, she had rather interesting taste in fashion.

As I watched in stunned silence, the colossal woman remained oblivious to my presence. It seemed like she didn’t even know she had taken out those three hollows. She muttered something under her breath, though my tiny form could hear it perfectly fine.

"I can't believe I have to patrol this godforsaken wasteland again," she grumbled, her voice a mix of irritation and boredom. "And this sand gets everywhere! Ugh, I’m gonna have to wash everything by the time I get back…"

Part of me wanted to try and call out to her to make my presence known, but another part of me feared her reaction. After all, if just a nonchalant step of her boot obliterated hollows over 3 times my size, who knows what could happen to me!? There wasn’t even a guarantee she’d be helpful if I got her attention. The book that Quincy had lent to me mentioned hollows called ‘Vasto Lordes’ in Hueco Mundo, and apparently, most of them had human-like physiques. If she was one of these, it was definitely over for me.

Erring on the side of caution, I decided to just stay where I am and watch. Though I couldn’t stay in the same place for too long, lest I meet the same fate those hollows did…
