Phineas scanned the note one more time, but the only other real useful piece of information on it was the name of his Master - Janus Dao. Of course, that set off another wave of disbelief in Phineas's mind. Professor Dao was one of the foremost sorcerers in the world today, a wizard who focused his studies on the dualities inherent in many magical traditions. Fire & water, light & dark, life & death - Professor Janus had made many discoveries in how they interacted with each other. It was a great honor to be selected as his apprentice.
Of course Janus Dao, like many powerful magicians, had his own eccentricities. In Dao's case, it was an obsession with the number two. He always trained two apprentices when he took them on, and they either passed together or failed together. Which meant that if he screwed up now, it wouldn't only be his ass on the line anymore. Another student's future would now ride on how well Phineas did as an apprentice to one of the most renowned mages in the world. Phineas groaned as he felt his stress continue to build.
As he made his way towards the accommodations office, Phineas saw several other students moving along with him. All of them had been chosen by other powerful wizards to be their apprentices. All except one, who would be Phineas's parter. Phineas wondered who it might be. As his eyes roved over his classmates, three in particular caught his attention.
The first was Bella Lovejoy. She was one of the most popular girls in his year, because she was both incredibly smart and incredibly generous. She had helped many of her classmates who were struggling with their coursework without a second thought. In fact, Phineas was fairly sure he would have failed Intermediary Elementalism without her aid. She was also rather pretty, with blonde hair and blue eyes. Best of all, in Phineas's opinion, was her softness. Bella was known for having a sweet tooth, and many students had repaid her help by giving her candies and pastries. Phineas himself had gone ahead and gotten her an entire pie when she'd helped him, and to his surprise had eaten it all in front of him. Naturally, her hips had been getting wider as time went on. Yes, having Bella Lovejoy as a partner would be rather nice.
There was also Gladia Storm, who was widely considered to be the smartest girl in his year. She had consistently earned top marks in all of her classes, and excelled at any task she set her mind to. As one might expect, she was very competitive and abrasive, which explained why she was not as popular as Bella was. Gladia occasionally shot a dark look at the blonde, and Phineas knew she considered Bella one of her biggest academic rivals. What might happen if she turned that intensity on him? Phineas shuddered as he remembered how intense she could be when she competed with anyone. Her black hair, grey eyes, and lithe figure were considered attractive to many, but not to him. Yes, Phineas would rather not be paired with Gladia Storm.
The last of the others to catch his attention was Misty Lune. Misty was, in one word, a tease. She enjoyed joking and flirting with everyone around her, which made her the life of the party. She was never too mean-spirited about it, though, which was why she still as popular as she was. That and the fact that Misty Lune was widely considered to have one of the best pair of breasts on campus. Even Phineas, who preferred his woman with thicker waists than Misty had, could appreciate them. Misty's white hair and pale skin, products of her albinism, also gave her a mysterious air. Being partnered with Misty Lune could be interesting.
Finally, Phineas and the rest arrived in the accommodations office, which was already full. Not with other wizards, but with various animals, demons, and spirits. Familiars, Phineas realized, contracted servants of their new masters. Each of the assembled familiars had signs floating by them with names on them. The signs all had names written on them - the familiars would guide the new apprentices to their teachers. After looking around, Phineas finally found his name on a sign that was floating by a two-headed hellhound puppy. There was also another name on that sign:
