Phineas sighed. "Figures I would be the one student transferred back to their regular dorm."
The result that he was stuck at Kunok Quarters again was a mild annoyance. He must have missed the cutoff date to apply for the dormitory transfer, much as he had last year. Only then it had been family pressuring him to better his prospects. This time Phineas had actually considered he might do with a change. There were wild, elaborate stories about how some of the students lived at the Citadel's other dormitories, quite the change of pace to an otherwise unremarkable wizard with a fat fetish.
That wasn't a slight against staying at Kunok Quarters by any means. They were perfectly fine dorms, although a tad 'average' compared to the eclectic mix of types in the premier magical academy. That was according to the dorm's detractors, although those who flocked to Kunok Quarters weren't picked for dudders.
Indeed, the community fostered at the long building of student housing suites saw its orderly design and basic fulfillment of needs as a strength. The Citadel Academy was a boarding school, after all, and with education as diverse and chaotic as the magical arts could get, there was something to be said for having the quiet comforts of home to retire to after a day of classes. Other dorms claimed to have the cleverest, the slyest, the most accommodating, or the boldest of their generation. At Kunok Quarters age, background, disposition towards magic and expertise hardly mattered. Your magic proved how could of a witch or wizard you were, so the students of the dorm banded together with neighborly friendships, at the very least as positive acquaintances, rather than relationships built solely on their dormitory's image.
The wings of the building that housed Kunok Quarters, stretched between the main assembly courtyard to the Citadel's array of temples to various deities of magic, were patterned over a familiar template framed in stone and timber. Student bedrooms were often shared with private commons for dorm mates, with public gathering halls in-between. Most floors had balcony access on one side. The furnishings were plain, functional and meant to be a solid foundation as students focused on their magical studies. Kunok Quarters was strategically located as close to the center of the Citadel campus as possible, making it easy to reach any class building and other hotspots in the complex. It didn't take long to walk down to Challenge Lake, for example, or to access the Great Hall, Gatehouse, Hospital Wing or Mail Office.
As Phineas approached the dorm he could hear excited conversation, the crackle of magical sparks or firecrackers, and music played on those talented with instruments. The dormitory was at its liveliest during holidays and special events, such as competitors between the dorms. Welcoming day was no exception. He offered himself a small smile knowing that he'd be returning to a well worn niche at the school. Not the most stupendous but perfectly acceptable.
It was finishing his checking in during his return to Kunok Quarters, however, that showed Phineas that his year was going to decidedly be unlike his previous years of schooling at the Citadel.
