Chapter #7

The children are developmentally behind

He forced a smile; as well as Randall could muster, knowing the circumstances regarding the group of children in the Mars room and felt a twinge of sadness as they came into view. The children -- despite being placed in educational ship with the best learning equipment known to humans everywhere -- were developmentally behind in ways that would make most parents worried. The children slowly toddled in, waddling with obvious thick bulges underneath their jumpsuits as their focus on the holo-projector was above everything else.

"All seven," Nurse Jolie called, she entered last with the final child holding her hand. She stood before Randall and presented one of the girls, only to be met with a shy reaction as she hid behind Nurse Jolie's leg. "This is Chirran. She's one of the brightest, but happens to be a little shy -- as you can see."

The child beared tattoo-like markings across her face, light blue in tone, with silver hair and a bright set of orange eyes. A gentle crouching motion by Randall allowed him to get a better look at her,

"A Chil'uluan?"

"Indeed," Nurse Jolie replied, "The warrior humans. Hailing from Arcturus IV, their young are marked with tattoo's -- being a mark for their family symbol." She stepped aside, removing Chirran's sudden protection against Randall and stood; vacantly staring at the inspector with a half-open mouth, lightly humming in curiosity.

"Hello, Chirran." Randal introduced himself, smiling. "I'm Randall. Nice to meet you."

"She hasn't learned many words," Nurse Jolie added, her usual smile dropped. "Nine years of age. I'm afraid to say her development has been slow; but much quicker than the others. She's polite, can keep her attention for much longer than the others and happens to be on the edge of feeding herself."

Alas; to Randall, the group of children were the latest in a long line of test subjects to undergo resistance to cosmic radiation and the unexplained forces of space. Their development was impaired, slower and more rigourous. Instead of the civilised, intelligent and well-behaved children they were originally supposed to be -- the group resembled an overgrown group of toddlers.

The job had to be done. It was time for Randall to spend time with several of the children and review their development since the last recorded cycle.
