Sitting in the middle of the room was a small pile of berries. Small being the operative word, as there are only about half a dozen. You frown and look at Null, "That's... not a lot. Did you eat the rest?"
"Affirmative. Berries, three of number. Sustenance achieved."
You blink and are about to speak when Five chimes in "Allow me. We don't need as much food as other Pokemon. This is due to our RKS Systems," as the chimeric Pokemon says this, they begin to to struggle with figuring out how to feed themselves with a helmet that featured a lack of an opening. Upon seeing this, Null huffs.
"Care press into opening of eye. Fall in allowance within helmet. Mouth agape, head jerk and toss. Catch," as ever, Null's explanation is even more confusing than the problem. However, just like before, Five seems to understand as they gently press the berry into the helmet's eye hole, taking care to not douse their own eye in the berry's juices. Once the berry was inside, Five began tossing their helmeted head. After a few tosses, the Pokemon makes a sound that is somewhat similar to a giggle.
"Got it!"
You chuckle at the sight, but can't help asking, "What were you saying about the RKS System?"
"Oh, right. The RKS System has more than just type functionality. It also functions as our energy generation system. It provides most of our body's energy, with the rest coming from small amounts of external sustenance. The exception to this is Battle Mode."
"Battle Mode?" You parrot even as Null seems to perk up. It seems to you like she is more interested in conversation all of a sudden.
"Whenever we are in a stressful situation, such as combat, the RKS System activates Battle Mode, flooding our bodies with an impressive amount of energy. Enough that we can match and exceed most other Pokemon. However, the system doesn't really restrict where that energy goes. So it... overloads our brains..."
"And you go wild?" You finish, Five's nod in response making clear that your guess is right.
"Yes. One of the others, Version 4, once told me that all our RKS Systems were the same. That, instead of trying to restrict how much energy reached our brains, the version difference was that they tried to teach us to better control ourselves so that we only use Battle Mode when needed... I wonder if he was right? Anyways... These helmets suppress the RKS System. It disables our type functionality and greatly restricts Battle Mode by reducing the flood to a steady, but constant, stream. As a result, we cannot change type and we are just as sluggish in battle as we always are... ..."
You consider what Five told you when you notice the Pokemon shivering, even shaking, "Hey, are you alright?"
"W-We've always been failures, haven't we? Experiments gone wrong... Not real Pokemon... Not real living things... Just synthetic cr-creatures that didn't even work... B-Broken... I-I..."
As Five despairs, you decide you need to stop this. If Five was going to be one of the two Pokemon you relied on, you wanted them to be all there. Also, you felt bad for the big Pokemon. So, you stride over to them and indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
