What pushed back against your hand was nothing you had experienced before. It didn't feel like a baby's hand or foot. Could this woman's child be deformed?
A check revealed that the woman was dilated to ten centimeters; though the doctor wasn't here, it was time for her to start pushing. "On the next contraction," you told her, "push."
She did, and you could see that the baby was already coming. This could be the easiest labor ever, you thought.
That thought, however, was replaced with astonishment, as the baby's head and paws emerged from the birth canal. Yes, paws; for, though the woman seemed perfectly ordinary, she was giving birth to...
"It's a kitten."
"A kitten?" she asked.
After cutting the umbilical cord, you held the kitten up, then handed it to the astonished mother.
Then your own astonishment returned, as she went into labor again. And, again, another kitten was born.
"How am I having kittens?" the woman asked.
"I don't know," you replied. "But you're having a litter. Here comes number three."
All in all, the woman had six kittens; three males, three females. "Am I okay?" she asked.
"You seem to be. How do you feel?"
"I think I'm getting used to it," she said, as she began nursing two of her kittens. "You know, my girlfriends used to say I was a crazy cat lady without the cats. Now look at me."
You arranged for her to be brought to a private room, so she wouldn't have to explain her kittens to anyone.
