Chapter #5

The Gift of the Mogwai

by: Sly F Author IconMail Icon
Randall "Rand" Peltzer, eccentric inventor, had no way of knowing what was in store for him when he stumbled in to that little shop in Chinatown looking for a gift for his son Billy.

The shop proprietress was Madame Wing, a severe yet beautiful Chinese widow in her sixties. She watched Rand like a hawk as he browsed her wares. Plenty of the bric-a-brac and knick-knacks were eye-catching, but none of them were quite what Rand was looking for. That is, until he heard a cute, trilling voice vocalizing what sounded like Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue.

Rand followed the sound until he found a small, ornate box. The lid opened as a big-eared, wide-eyed little creature popped out and stared at him. He'd found it. The perfect gift.

But Madame Wing was obstinate. No matter how much cash Rand offered her, she insisted that the "Mogwai" was not for sale.

Rand gave up and was heading for the door. But Wing had a granddaughter about Billy's age. She tugged on Rand's sleeve and whispered he should meet her outside.

In the alley behind the shop, Wing's granddaughter gave Rand the box with the Mogwai in it in exchange for his wad of cash. But before letting him go, she instructed him on three major rules for taking care of the creature.

1) Keep them away from bright lights. Bright lights can hurt them, and sunlight could kill them.

2) Never get them wet.

3) Most important of all, never, no matter how much they beg, feed them after midnight.

Billy was having a rough day. At his job at the bank, he had to deal not only with the town's very own Scrooge, Mrs. Ruby Deagle, but also his slimy superior, Gerald Hopkins, who was gunning not only for a promotion but for Billy's girlfriend Kate Berringer. Then, when he went to pick Kate up from her shift at the bar, they had to deal with getting Billy's drunk neighbor, Murray Futterman, back home. As they dragged him through the snow, he rambled about "gremlins" during the war. He said they'd sabotage military equipment. He also claimed the females of the species were attracted to human males and would take advantage of them when they were at their most vulnerable.

Then Billy walked Kate home and had to contend with the bad mood Christmas put her in for some reason.

His night got better when he opened the gift from his dad, though. Rand dimmed the lights and Billy removed the wrapping paper to find the ornate box inside. The lid slowly opened as the tiny, cuddly creature climbed out, much to the fascination of Billy, his mother, and his dog.

The creature had wide, tan ears and big, violet eyes. It was covered in white and cream-colored fur, and it appeared to have platinum blonde hair flowing from its head down its back. It had unusually big lips and long lashes, and it seemed to be batting them at Billy as if flirting while serenading him by humming Gershwin.

"It's called a Mogwai," Rand explained. "I have no was of 100% knowing what gender the little fuzzball is, but I call the little cutie Greta because it reminds me of Greta Garbo."

Then Rand recapped the three rules for Billy.

That night, Billy cuddled Greta tightly as he slept. Greta snuggled up close, breathing in Billy's musk. Greta had much more devious things in mind for him than mere cuddles.

You have the following choices:

1. Greta eats after midnight and becomes a gremlin.

*Pen*
2. Greta gets wet and multiplies.

*Pen* indicates the next chapter needs to be written.
