BEEP! BEEP!
Casey tutted slowly as he moved the metal detector away from the woman at the front of the pool entrance, deftly slipping the minuscule paperclip in his hand back into the pocket of his khaki swim shorts. The woman groaned, exasperated; this was the fifth stop of this manner that Casey had subjected to in the past fortnight. At this point she didn’t even protest. With three rowdy kids itching to hop into the pool standing behind her, she’s rather get it over and done with as soon as possible. She was familiar with the procedure by this point and raised her arms into a T-pose, giving Casey a perfect view of her beautiful cleavage inside the very, very skimpy white bikini she was wearing.
“Sorry, ma’am,” Casey said with no remorse while stifling a snigger. “Just standard procedure.” The woman said nothing but rolled her eyes as Casey approached. He took his sweet time inspecting the woman, stroking her smooth arms and legs and even taking the liberty of giving her butt a slight squeeze for good measure. The woman suppressed her urge to lash out at him, instead fantasising herself ploughing her heel into the hilt of his nose. Once he’d thoroughly examined her, he waved her off and grinned as he watched her backside sway towards the poolside. Casey wished he had his phone on hand so he could’ve taken a cheeky pic to save for later. Though Ms. Brown was Casey’s preferred victim, she was only one of several other beach babes that Casey frequently stopped and searched for contraband. This was one of the many reasons why he was so chuffed that he’d convinced his Mum to tell his sister to put in a good word for him for this summer job. Getting decent pay to sit around and stare at hotties by poolside, all before the age of 17. What more could a boy want?
Carey’s moment of self-aggrandisement was cut short as he felt a small, but strong, hand cuff him around the back of the head. Casey squealed girlishly, whining, “Ow, what the f*ck was that for, Louise?!” He’d turned around and there stood his older sister, garbed in the same red polo and khaki shorts, but with her hands placed angrily on her hips. Judging by the malicious snarl she directed his way she was very close to tearing his head off. Without warning she reached towards his pocket and pulled out the paperclip, her eyebrows furrowed dangerously close. Her grey eyes had clouded over in a tempest of rage. “First off,” she started, her voice monotonous but with a hint of malevolence, “When we’re here, at work, you don’t call me ‘Louise’, you call me ‘Boss’. Second, don’t ever let me hear you swear during your shift ever again. Last, but most certainly not least, if I catch you playing around with the metal detectors one more time just to frisk up another innocent woman, God so help me, I will personally drown you inside the hot tub.”
Casey sniggered but held in his urge to laugh in her face. “Understood, ‘Boss’.” He saluted her sarcastically and flipped her a middle finger as she strode back towards her station. God, she was a stick in the mud. He often wondered how two people so dissimilar could be related. Sure, they both shared the same mousy brown hair and silvery eyes but whereas his sister had always been a conservative little nerd, Casey had opted for the athletic route and welcomed attention instead of shirking from it like Louise. It also helped that he stood at a decent height of 5’9”—he may’ve been 2 years his sister’s junior but he’d dwarfed her for a long while and never failed to tease her about it. He also never failed to boast about his broad chest and pecs to her, taunting her for her flat chest and slight frame. All in all, Casey was a huge d*ck and he absolutely loved it.
However, as much of an ass he was, he was just as competent a lifeguard as he was a douche. His ears pricked upwards as he heard the shrill, high pitched shrieks of a lady who was flailing helplessly in the deepened end of the pool. He didn’t even think as he ran towards the water, ripping off his shirt and blowing his whistle to clear people out of his path. He leaped into the pool, arcing downwards in an elegant swan dive, and submerged himself underneath the waves. His head popped up a mere moment later and he rapidly located the stranded swimmer. He swam beside the woman and looped her arm around his neck (a difficult task considering the lady was quite heavyset and kept on frantically screaming whilst he tried to paddle them back to shore). Casey hoisted the woman out of the water and set her by the tiled poolside as he sat back and collected his breath. To his surprise, no one seemed to acknowledge the seamless rescue he’d just performed. Instead they were all trapped in some kind of suspended animation. Casey looked around dumbfounded; children splashing each other with water had suddenly stopped, the water particles inexplicably hovering in midair. Parents supervising their kids had stopped their conversations mid sentence. One exuberant little boy was stuck halfway through his cannonball, suspended over the water with a toothy grin laced onto his face.
Casey jumped back as he heard the woman groan from beside him. He moved to help her up but she slapped his hand away and rocked her way upwards. Somehow her clothes didn’t even seem to have a drop of water on them. Wait, he thought as he looked down at himself, How am I not wet? His eyes darted back to the tubby woman and he observed as she pulled out a small electronic cigarette from thin air and inhaled a deep puff. The woman noticed his incredulous stare and laughed, a hearty chuckle that unsettled Casey even further. “Sorry, kid,” she rasped, “I’m trying to quit. Gotta take the occasional blow or I go absolutely ape-sh*t.” Casey flinched as the woman took his head in her stubby fingers, wincing as she tugged on his surfer curls and whining as she pulled on his cheeks.
“Sheesh, you humans are getting worse and worse by the generation.” She clicked her fingers and the electronic cigarette broke down into a tiny ball in the air, eventually collapsing into nothing as if it wasn’t there. She shrugged her shoulders and said, “Oh well, can’t help that. Listen kid, I’ve got some news to break to you: I caused everything to stop. From the lifeguards, to the losers, to the lesbians, I froze each and every one of them so we could have this little chat, just you and me. See, I’m no ordinary being. I used to be part of this ancient sect of powered individuals, all dark and mysterious and brooding. We even had matching black cloaks! Anyways, I got bored of all the rules, regulations and bureaucracy that came with the role so I left, stripped myself of my title and began studying other areas of the arcane. Alas, despite the incredible power that I possessed, I couldn’t escape Father Time, no matter what form I took. Now it’s time for me to choose an apprentice, someone to take the burden of my power and continue my legacy. You, Casey Turner, are apparently the one worthy of this responsibility. Now, will you accept your destiny?”
Casey thought about it for a moment. “Erm, no thanks,” he bluntly replied.
“What the hell do you mean, ‘no thanks’?!,” the woman spluttered. “I’ve just offered you unimaginable power, the type that would make any normal person water at the mouth, the type that people would literally kill for!”
“Sorry! I mean, I’m flattered but I’m not really the ‘responsibility’ type of guy. I mean, why would you trust me with that kind of power?! My sister meanwhile, she’s a stickler for responsibilities. I’m sure she’d be a hell of a lot better than me!” The woman groaned and rubbed her temples angrily. It looked evident that she wasn’t used to people refusing to accept incredible power without consequences (I mean, wouldn’t you at least consider it?). All of a sudden it seemed like a lightbulb switched on in her head and a sly grin stretched across her face. “Know what, kid,” she chuckled. “There’s no need to worry about the power after all.” Casey breathed a sigh of relief.
“Thank God. Between school and lifeguard training, I don’t think I...”
“I’ll just go inside you and make sure you learn how to control it.” Wait, what?, Casey thought before the lady coiled up into a cloud of black smoke and shot towards him, exploding into each of his orifices with enough velocity to knock him onto the ground. He writhed and squirmed, his body jerking uncontrollably as unheard of knowledge flooded his mind, knowledge on possessing others, inhabiting their forms, extracting souls from their bodies and even sending mental clones of himself into those same vessels. His brain raced as his mind struggled to accept this new reality opened up to it. But it was too much to process at once. Soon enough Casey’s head lolled onto its side and his eyes slowly shut, accepting the blackness as it became all encompassing.
