Chapter #5
With another set of employees
by: Unknown
“Aren’t you just a teensy but afraid?”
Jake sighed. This was the third time his twin sister had asked the same question in the last fifteen seconds. It was becoming tiresome to even acknowledge it at this point.
“Spanner,” he mumbled, his welding goggles perched onto his eyes and his head thoroughly buried in the wiring of a project they’d both been working on before the lockdown had been announced. Jenny sighed and rolled her eyes, rifling through the toolbox for a moment or two before passing something metallic over to him.
“I’m just saying,” she continued, “Procedures like this only happen in worst-case scenarios, when either something ones a way to crawl it’s way inside of, even worse, wants to get out.”
Jake groaned. He pulled his head out of the open panel for a moment. “This is a wrench, Jen, not a spanner.”
“Well, excuse me, Mr Unshakable! Sorry that I’m a little bit unnerved by all of this, it’s just that we might be in a situation of very grave danger here! What if he’s locking us in as a first line of defence for something that wants out of this dump! You know what kinda experiments we do, who knows what we could’ve accidentally given sentience?!”
Jenny breathed loudly for a moment or two after her rant. Jake stepped down from the ladder he was perched on. Without a single word even being exchanged, both twins stepped towards one another, pulling their counterpart into a tight embrace that seemed to melt away all troubles.
“Thanks, Jake,” Jenny sighed. “You always know how to take my mind off things.”
Jake smiled from over her shoulder. “No worries, what are bro—ow!” Jane let go of the embrace for a second to nurse a sudden sore spot on the back of his neck.
“What is it?” Jenny asked before she felt a similar pinprick on the back of her neck. She went to rub the tender spot and came back with a single drop of blood trickling down her index finger. “Weird,” she thought to herself as both the Duckhold twins looked around in silence and confusion.
