That was an excellent question that the youngest member of the Golden Deer posed. Who were they going to send out there to fight Hilda? Based on how the spell was concocted, the rookie professor only had two real options.
Hilda was obviously a no go since she was the actual threat at the moment and Lysithea wasn't an option since she was the spellcaster. That left the Golden Deer with only two real viable options.
Leonie was strong though her gross overestimation of her skills was her greatest weakness. More than a few times she lost to others in spars as a result. Her greatest loss being to Claude.
Then there was Marianne. She was the meekest member of the Golden Deer house could easily fade into the background. She lacked self-confidence and her overall gloomy nature raised many concerns for the rookie professor.
Logic dictated that Leonie was the safest bet, but Byleth wasn't so sure. She could easily get too caught up and that wouldn't be good for anyone, also what would they do if the power went to her head too?
Marianne on the other hand while not as vibrant wasn't half bad with a sword. In fact, he dares to say she was actually quite good. Plus, her overall personally practically ensured she wouldn't go mad with power.
It was risky, but perhaps the more unorthodox choice was the right one in this scenario. "Hmm?"
"What are you thinking there, teach?" Claude asked.
"I am indeed curious as well." Lorenz added.
"As am I." Ignatz spoke.
Byleth placed a hand to his chin as he looked over at his charges. They wanted to hear his decision since he was in charge of their house, but he wasn't too sure how they would react.
Lysithea waited patiently, Leonie looked eager, Marianne was staring at the ground, and Raphael just looked hungry. Two viable choices and only one correct answer.
"I've made my decision." Byleth announced. Everyone seemed to lean in just a little closer to hear who they were sending into battle. "We're sending Marianne."
