This choice: Deus is summoned back to the office • Go Back...Chapter #6Deus is summoned back to the office by: sdaze "I see," said Deus as Emma finished explaining the situation to her.
Emma had found an excuse to send Liz away so she could speak with Deus privately. "So do you think you can provide the documents we need?" She asked.
"I don't have anything like that. I can create forgeries easily but it's unlikely they will pass any kind of scrutiny," she said.
"I'm guessing you're not on any computers systems," Emma said.
Deus shook her head. She knew that computers were useful tools for the mortals but as their society grew in complexity so did their dependence on them. It had been so much easier when humans kept track of things by themselves. "Very well, if this is what is required," she said enigmatically as she raised both her hands in the air.
Dozens of green energy beams shot out of her hands in multiple directions. They disappeared through the walls, floor and ceiling. Emma watched one of the shards of light pass through a window, disappearing into the sky, some distance away.
The beams moved as Deus manipulated them with her fingers, creating a fabulous light show. Emma marvelled at the sight. "Nobody else can see this right?" she asked, worried the store would look like a green beacon in the middle of town.
"No, just you and I," she confirmed. She closed her eyes, "Now I must concentrate." Deus expanded her mind along the strands she had created. She needed to create a history for herself. First her birth registration. She made herself the child of an immigrant family, so she didn't have to create a record of her ancestors.
She moved quickly on to medical certificates, then her education. She made herself an orphan to minimise the number of close attachments she needed. She was surprised to discovered there was some human oversight with many of the records. Briefly glowing green, signatures appeared on documents buried in filing cabinets, hundreds of miles away.
As she fabricated a life, more and more records had to be added and modified. Some proved quite challenging, they were tallied and sequential. Just sticking an extra entry in randomly would arouse suspicion. Luckily for her, mortals were fallible and put systems into place to allow for mistakes being made. Deus took full advantage of these systems as she created a whole new person from nothing.
Government databases, electoral registers, driver registration, bank accounts, histories of shopping transactions, utility bills, online registrations, tax reports, benefit records, library cards, social clubs, phone call logs, sometimes multiple copies of each, there seemed no end to it. She also had to plant faded memories in the minds of many mortals, teachers, school friends, doctors, she worried all this work might be too much even for her. She could feel herself becoming physically drained as her power weaved its way through this realm.
Suddenly the beams vanished and a passport materialised in her hand. She grasped it tightly, as she nearly collapsed. She placed it on Emma's desk.
"This is real?" Emma asked as she picked it up to look at it.
"As real as any other," Deus croaked as she moved unsteadily on her feet, "It is technically a forgery but there is no evidence to prove it so. I have made sure of that." She looked a little sullen, "And now I've bound myself to your world," she said with a tinge of sadness in her voice.
"What do you mean?" Emma asked wondering what she meant by the word 'bound'.
Deus couldn't express it in terms her manager could understand. "It doesn't matter. It is done now," she told her.
Emma opened the passport. In the small portrait photograph, it was clear to Emma that Deus was still wearing her company polo. Only the top of her shoulders were visible, so it just looked like any other polo. "Deus Ex Machina," Emma said reading Deus's full name. Deus smiled at her little joke that Emma didn't pick up on. She continued to read, "Born 1991 in Bournemouth."
Deus pointed at the desk. Emma looked down and saw a new employee pack. She looked through the pages. It had been completed by Deus's magic. All the forms were filled in except one. "I do not currently have lodgings," she explained to Emma.
"A place to live?" Emma asked.
"Natalie believed another staff member may be looking for a," she paused, "flatmate."
Emma grinned, she immediately had someone in mind. "Leave it with me," Emma told her mysterious new employee.

"I've got her this time, I've actually got her," a delighted Gemma said out loud as she drove her car as quickly as she could to the store. She'd been checking the online system on her phone when she received an automated HR email, informing her a new employee for the Rotherham store had been registered.
After quickly checking, she discovered the hiring wasn't sanctioned by the area manager and she knew Emma had severely overstepped her authority.
For some time now Gemma had considered Emma a thorn in her side. Ever since the previous manager Elizabeth had left, Emma had taken all sorts of liberties in her position. For one thing, Gemma suspected that Liz did most of Emma's work. She'd not been able to prove anything though, there was never sufficient evidence of any wrong doing. That was until today, she knew Emma had screwed up big time.
She didn't want to waste any time confronting her about her breach of company procedure. She was hoping once she'd completed her report, Emma would get severely disciplined and would play by the proper rules in the future. Gemma also wanted the humiliated Emma to give her the respect she believed she deserved.
She parked in the large car park behind the store. She got out of her car quickly and was immediately spotted by Aaron who was around the back of the building having a smoke. He watched as Gemma strode with gusto towards the footbridge. He knew this wasn't a good sign. It wasn't her regular visiting day and she looked too purposeful in her stride. Normally it seemed she had no interest in anything going on in the store and only tolerated being there because it was part of her job.
"Shit!" he said, quickly extinguishing his cigarette. He headed back inside, hoping she hadn't spotted him.
