This choice: Monday Day 4 of practice • Go Back...Chapter #12Monday Day 4 of practice by: Kirafair   When the Lunch period arrived, Chris had little hope that Julia would save a seat for him. Especially after the verbal sparring match they had this weekend. His prediction was correct, Julia and her friends were again sitting with some Varsity Football players. Chris and his friends ate their lunch with Maria Ruiz and a couple other girls from the squad.
Naturally their conversation revolved around cheerleading. In between glances at Julia’s table, Chris was only partly listening to what the girls were saying. In fact it was Simon who was doing most of the talking for the three boys.
“We were wondering…” Maria said just a bit louder to get Chris’ attention. Once she did “The squad thought we would practice today with one addition to our outfits.”
“And what would that be?” said Chris with curiosity.
“Something we need for most night games and always once the weather gets cooler. That would be pantyhose” she said with a deadpan expression.
Chris looked at her with a frown “Are you serious?”
“I mean you’re already wearing Julia’s, Jessica’s and Tammy’s workout gear. Its just one more piece” she said trying to coax the boys.
“Besides, I bet you if you tried them on you would find how silky and enjoyable they feel” she added.
‘And you would win that bet’ thought Chris remembering just yesterday when he had tried on his Mother’s hosiery. He somehow managed to not betray his thoughts out loud.
He hesitated “I don’t know Maria”
“If you’re worried about the image, I’ve heard that NFL football players used to wear pantyhose in games when it was really cold weather” she said sincerely.
All three boys looked at her in shock. “Look it up. One example is the playoff game between the Chargers and Bengals in Cincinnati. It was below -10 degrees F (-22 C). Pantyhose helped the players stay warm. Also, have you heard of a player named Joe Namath?”
Chris replied “Yeah, he was a Quarterback for the NY Jets in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Lead the team to their only Super Bowl Championship and is in the Hall of Fame.”
Maria nodded “He did a Television commercial wearing pantyhose.” (Kira: Both stories are true)
Maria looked on as the boys reluctance seemed to fade away. ‘Google can be such a wonderful resource. Who knew you could find so much information about football players and pantyhose’ she thought with delight.

Later that afternoon, the JV football team had just completed it’s usual endurance drills as Coach Forsythe watched. He noted that the three girls were more than holding their own with their teammates. “Munroe, Garret, and Duncan on me” he barked.
Julia trotted over with her friends. She rather enjoyed when the Coach called her by her last name. There were no ‘Boys’ or ‘Girls’ here, just individual players.
When Julia, Jessica, and Tammy had arrived he began “You know were about to do some full contact scrimmage.” It was more of a statement than a question. He held up a couple spiral bound books “These Playbooks contain all the Offensive and Defensive plays we can use during a game. They show exactly what each player is supposed to do for each play”. He handed a book to each of the girls.
“Duncan, I invited you over just so you wouldn’t feel left out but you have just one play to focus on. Kick the ball as far as you can” he said with a smile and playfully thumped her on top of her helmet
‘How considerate of the Coach. No wonder he is so well liked by the team’ Julia thought
Coach Forsythe then focused on Jessica. “Garrett, I want you to study the Green Tabs. These are the Offensive Passing plays”. He opened a to a specific page “These circles are the different Offensive players. I want you to study the ‘H’ symbol for now but feel free to look at the other Receiver spots X,Y, and Z.

“This play is Green Left 19. As the H back, you actually don’t move at the snap. The two receivers on either side break down field. If the defense focuses on them, which they should, our Quarterback then has an easy pass to you, the open ‘H’ back” he pointed at her chest.
Jessica was flipping through the book “I didn’t realize how many different plays can be called” she said with amazement.
“I’ll help you out for the next few days but you will be expected to know each play by heart. I think most fans tend to think of Football as just a massive physical struggle. For some positions they are mostly correct but Football can almost be like a chess match.”
The girls looked on intently so he continued “Munroe, I want you to study the Black Tabs for the Defensive schemes. They are designed to directly counter a specific Offensive play. In a game I may call for a certain Defensive play because I’m trying to outguess what the Offensive team is about to run. Sometimes the other Coach will try to second guess my guess and run a play with greater chances of success. There is definitely a great deal of strategy and mind games that are going on behind the scenes of any football game.
He was glad to see they appeared eager to learn. “Alright let’s get going” he yelled as he slapped their shoulder pads.

Chris gave helpful advice on how to pull on pantyhose to Jake and Simon. Neither asked how he came about such information and Chris did not volunteer his own experience. Soon the boys were in practice similarly attired as their squad mates. Makeup on, hair brushed back and held by a headband as well as the same practice uniform of a tight Gray t-shirt, black shorts, white ankle socks and white sneakers. Things appeared to be going well.
“That’s what I like to see. Well done everybody” Coach Boseley praised her squad. She paused as if she was considering something.
“How do you feel about trying something very advanced?” Chris and they boys didn’t know what she meant so remained silent but the girls expressed their eagerness.
“Alright, lets try a Double Thigh Stand.” Chris gave Maria a blank look but she appeared to be astonished “Coach has never lets us try it before. She didn’t think we were strong enough” she whispered.
Coach Bosley spoke “Chris and Jake come here.” When the boys stood in front of her she said “You two will be the base. I’ll teach you what to do but it might easier first if I just show you what you will be doing.” She pulled up a picture on her phone.

Chris and Jake carefully arranged their feet and readied themselves. Simon stood just behind with Coach Bosley spotting him in case he fell. At her command, he jumped onto Chris and Jake’s legs and with a triumphant yell raised his hands. The girls squealed with excitement and all begged for a chance to try. Chris and Jake obligingly supported each of the girls as they had a turn at performing this stunt. When they were done the squad excitedly hugged the boys for helping them with this achievement. The boys flushed with embarrassment from all the attention but on some level they were pleased at being a key part of this moment.
As practice ended, Maria approached the boys to give them some makeup remover towelettes. As she pulled the second sheet out, it became apparent the package was now empty.
“Oh no! I could have sworn there was enough in here” she sputtered. She gave an apologetic look to the boys

Maria was interested to see how the boys would react. Her statement that she thought she had enough towelettes was technically true. At least it had been before practice when she deliberately removed a dozen sheets and threw them in the garbage. ‘If the boys think about it, they could probably make those two sheets work for all three of them’ she thought.

Perhaps because he was the de facto leader of their little group or maybe just a part of him didn’t want to take the makeup off, Chris took the initiative “Its okay Maria, give those to Jake and Simon. I’ll get cleaned up at home”
In the locker room Chris dawdled a bit and was the last to leave after he had changed back to his school clothes. He took a final look at his face in a mirror.

With much less anxiety than expected, he left for his long walk home. At the school entrance he was surprised to see Maria standing by the door. She appeared to have been waiting for him.

As Maria waited for Chris, she recalled that Julia had only ‘suggested’ ideas like makeup and pantyhose for the boys to see what being a cheerleader was like. Maria had an idea evolving in her mind once Chris said he would leave his makeup on. She had her own motivations in play.
“I wanted to see if you wanted to walk home together. Help you fly under the radar so to speak.”
“That would be nice. Thanks” Chris said.
“In fact I have this crazy idea” she said softy as she lowered he head. When she didn’t continue, Chris prodded her “Go on”
“To really make sure no one notices anything odd about you, we could swap the clothes we have on now. Everyone would just see two girls walking home.”
Chris was stunned at her suggestion. Maria had changed after practice back to the outfit she had on when he saw her at Lunch. A loose fitting White Blouse, knee length acid washed Denim skirt and some Black leather sandals.
