The awkward walk over was only made all the more awkward when Judy opened the door to find her parents waiting to greet her.
"Oh," Judy said, moving to the other side of the door to hide her feet. "Hi, mom and dad. I just saw a, um, spider which is why I shrieked. What, uh, what are you doing here?"
"Well," said her dad. "We were in the neighborhood with a local farmers convention, Jude. Might we come in?"
"Oh. Oh! Uh, yeah. One sec. Let me...Clean up the place a bit."
Judy didn't know how to explain what happened to herself, much less her parents. The last thing she needed was them thinking this was some scary thing about the city, that it made a rabbit's feet grow twice their usual size. When really it was whatever this strange ray gun was that she had bought at the antique store. Judy didn't have much time to look at it with her parents waiting patiently outside for her, so she quickly snatched up and tucked it into her utility belt.
Judy's bigger concern was her feet and how to hide them.
She went digging in her closet for something that might work before settling on the biggest pair of slippers she could find. Even so, with her feet doubled in their usual length and width, it was a great struggle to force them into the fuzzy pink slippers. It felt so cramped and Judy couldn't even wiggle her toes. Somehow she managed and though her feet still looked swollen, they didn't seem quite as big with the slippers covering them.
"Alright," Judy said opening the door for her parents again. "Sorry about that. So, what's up?"
"Oh, nothing much, Jude," said her dad as he stepped inside the apartment. "Like I said, we were in the neighborhood and though 'hey, might as well see how Judy's doing.'"
"I'm doing good..."
"How's the job at the police department? Not leaping feet first into things, are you?"
"Hah, uh, not exactly..."
What followed was the usual occurrence whenever her parents came to visit. They'd all sit around Judy's much too small apartment just talk about life on the farm. And Judy might have found it all terribly interesting if there wasn't a more concerning matter on her mind.
Her feet were feeling cramped. Worse, she could detect that slipper was starting to fall apart at the seams just trying to hold it in. It wouldn't be long until her feet just bursted out in front of her parents. Besides all that, Judy really wanted to give the ray gun a better look, given it was what caused all this. Judy's paw continually brushed against it, trying to see if she could feel something about it.
Something was bound to happen during this visit, it was only a matter of time. The only question was what?
