"Oh, uh, actually my girlfriend's right over there..."
Of course Ethan had a girlfriend. That sobering realization shot through both West sisters like a quick, bitter bolt of lightning as he turned slightly to gesture towards where the two of them were presumably sitting while he waited on the food. Haley couldn't help but take some solace in knowing that Tara playing herself up as the skinny, successful sister when compared to her was all for naught, but she still didn't appreciate the fact that she'd been embarrassed for nothing. Especially in front of one of her more prominent flings from high school...
"O-Oh!" Tara recovered pathetically, hands receding as if in an apology from Haley's fat ass as she placed them on her hips defensively, "I, uh... didn't see her there."
It wasn't quite clear how anyone could have missed her. The woman that Ethan had been sitting with wasn't exactly conservative with her appearance. A bad black dye job with ivory skin and makeup on top of that to make her look that much paler—a full, fat face that drooped into a prominent flap of double chin, and a body that just got wider still the further your eyes went down. The upper half of her stomach swelled against and beached onto the table while two comparatively pathetic poundcake breasts wrestled with her hammy arms in the pathetically stretched t-shirt that she'd squeezed over herself.
As much as Haley just liked to not think about her own size these days... this was the first time in quite a while that she had seen someone so much bigger than her in person.
At least she didn't have to feel that self-conscious about her size. Not if this cow was the woman that Ethan was dating.
"I don't know if y'all remember Dani, but we used to go to high school together..."
And here, Haley's relative nonchalance about the size of Ethan's girlfriend (who was she to judge, right?) immediately began to melt away. That was Dani? As in, the bitchy waitress who used to work at Big Daddy's Dani? The one who went off on trying to start that food blog, but nothing ever came of it, Dani? The one that made so many sour remarks about everything that Haley and Courtney just eventually wound up cutting her out of their friend group, Dani?
And he was with her?
And she was fat?
"I... remember." Haley answered for the two of them in a sour-faced surrender to the strangeness of having seen her again before waving slowly at the goth gourmand tucking away at what had to have been a side order of fries.
Dani responded with a curt, but nonetheless insufferably smarmy smile before getting back to munching on an order of fries. This time making sure that she never broke eye contact with the hippy, huffy Haley who was busy staring her down like it was high school all over again. Her chunky little finger wave made it all the more shit-eating.
"You guys wanna pull up a table and join us?" Ethan asked, oblivious and happy to play off being hit on by Haley's older sister, "We were just waiting on our order to get ready."
"Judging by the size of her, you're gonna be waiting a while..."
"Huh? What'd you say?" Ethan looked back over, oblivious as ever
"I-I said awwwwwww!!" Tara lied expertly, "How long... um... how long have you two been dating?"
"Almost three years now." Ethan said bashfully, "Our anniversary's actually coming up in October."
"Awww, spookiversary for a spooky..."
Pumpkin-shaped goth girl—Tara groused to herself.
"You know, spooky girl!"
"Aw, she's not so spooky when you get to know her." Ethan waved to his still sedentary girlfriend as she made record time through her order of fries, no doubt out of frustration at seeing two of her least favorite people talking to her boyfriend, "But yeah, we're just picking up some lunch. Like I said, you're more than welcome to join us!"
Just looking over at Dani made it clear that they should not join Ethan and Dani on their date. Especially not before their food had arrived. And especially not if she had caught Tara trying to flirt shamelessly with her boyfriend. Which, of course, she had...
