Chapter #6

Dani and The Rancor's Nest

by: Bobo the Hobo Author IconMail Icon
Dani's ex-boyfriend Caleb used to take her to this place all the time.

They were both super into anime and eventually, he got her into some of the superhero crap that used to constitute their dates back in high school. They'd dated for a few months before he broke up with her for some girl with a big ass, but as a quiet little power move Dani had done her best to stop by whenever she could so that she could assert dominance on the off chance that they ever ran into each other and make her ex-boyfriend super uncomfortable.

And she had, but now Dani just liked to come because they got cool nerd shit.

"Hey, Dani!" the petite little blue-haired girl said from behind the counter, "New stuff's on the bookshelf over there, okay?"

The short, loud girl grunted as she hefted up a few shortboxes of comics, on stacked on top of the other.

"I'll be right over!"

Dani hadn't even mustered up a weak 'kay before just going over there herself. Keeley was nice, but Dani wasn't quite sure where she got the energy. They'd met at a crappy dive bar once and now all of the sudden they were besties. It was nice to have someone keep you in the loop about stuff you liked, sure, but Keeley had always been more of a "I see you when I'm out" friend over a "let's hang out at my place" friend.

That being said, having an in at this place was nice.

The Rancor's Nest was one of the biggest comic shops in South Carolina. It was so large that its new location of the past five years or so was a retrofitted Bi-Lo shopping center, with half of the storefront dedicated to storage and private game rooms and the other half converted into a showfront. There were comics, manga, games, those weird blank figures that looked stupid hard to paint. Dani used to spend like an hour in the old location at a time so that Caleb could look for Magic singles, and it had always been a good place to read manga for free without an internet connection or disposable income.

Until they took away the couches... fucking pussies.

Heading over to the anime section to check out the big tiddy statues and to see if they'd gotten in any of the obscure stuff she liked, Dani tugged her Big Daddy's shirt down over her stomach as she bent over slightly to read the sideways spines of the selection. She could feel it right up a bit in the back, exposing the marshmallow fluff that made up the small of her back to anyone unfortunate enough to be looking down the aisle.

Is this shirt really that tight? No more onion rings for me, Jesus Christ I just got this thing...

Dani stood back up with a volume of manga in hand, reading the back of it to see if it was as interesting as it looked. She liked the big tiddy monster girl stuff as much as the next weeb, but this stuff was basically porn...

"Sorry about that." Keeley's voice came down the aisle sooner than she did, even with her manic short girl energy propelling her forward at far faster than what Dani would call a casual walk, "Anyway. Heyyyy~!!"

Keeley was the exuberant, cute, alternative girl to Dani's big-everything goth girl. She was short, she had a short, black to blue ombre (that had to have been professionally done, it literally always looked good) and had big innocent vibes. She was closer to Josie's age than anything, but you could have told Dani that she was just turning eighteen and she might have believed it. If it hadn't been for meeting her on one of the Zero Hour's concert nights, then Dani would have never been the wiser.

It honestly made her just a little more annoying to be around.

She was skinny, cute, and all friendly? Dani was one out of three on average depending on whether or not she felt like a cow that morning—how the fuck was that fair?

"Hey Keels." Dani offered her a begrudging side-hug, "Thanks for the heads up. I hate going to the bookstore and looking like a weeb in front of the literate people."

"I gotchu girl." Keeley gave a little thumbs up, "Hey, I've got something for you from behind the counter..."

Dani was taken aback slightly. A something? For her? That wasn't from the city or come with a THIRD NOTICE warning? It might just be her lucky day...
