There was nothing ominous in the tone of Ms. Smith's request. Bear McCreary's Damien theme song didn't start playing in your head as she spoke. Ms. Smith just politely asked if you and Sid would come to her class at the end of the day. It was phrased in that way a lot of teachers use to make it sound like you had an option of not showing up when you really didn't.

It's just that, until now, all the teachers who had made that "request" to you didn't have harpy wings.

"I don't think she can do that," Sid insisted, as you two stood out in the hall. "Tell us we have to come see her after school. She's just a substitute teacher."

"Dude, she's a harpy. We got to find out what she's doing here. I mean, if she's wanting to see us, she has to know something we did. What if she knows what we did to Principal Higgins at the end of school last year?" Dozens of nightmare scenarios were playing through your head about what was going to happen at this after school meeting.

Sid wasn't freaking out like you were. though. For some reason, he was totally focused on the fact that Ms. Smith was a substitute teacher, and therefore didn't have the authority to ask you two to see her after school. The fact that Ms. Smith was a harpy never seemed to enter into his thinking.

You were about to question Sid about his state of denial when the bell rang and you both had to go to separate classes.
