After a couple hours of scheming, you hear the door to her bedroom finally creak open and the familiar thump of her feet tromping down the stairs. Something is different about her. She is no longer visibly upset. In fact, she is suspiciously perky.
She descends the staircase and ominously walks toward you with a small stack papers. "Alright Stan, I’ve got a deal for you. If you do agree to work as my “personal assistant”, I can make it worth your while. I realized that I was wrong to just try take advantage of you and only give you $2.00. That wasnt fair at all."
"I don't know, Amy. You were just talking about making me your own personal servant earlier tonight."
"You're very smart Stan and I completely understand why you wouldn't trust me. But I had time to cool off and think about how to make this fair for both of us. Just imagine a hundred bucks a day, maybe even more than that for easy work. You’d be able to pay back Mom within just a few weeks, maybe even sooner if you are really motivated."
You were still skeptical and rightfully so. "So what exactly are you offering?" you ask.
"You’ll have to do whatever errands that I need to make my life easier. You know things like my normal chores, maybe a foot rub once in a while, easy stuff. We can even make a little contract so everything is in writing and fair.” She offers optimistically.
You think about it and although it is humiliating, she is offering a significant amount of cash to help end your servitude. Between this and your part time job, you could get out of this situation pretty quickly. It’s unlike her to help you so it must have a few strings attached. She senses your hesitation and offers some encouragement.
“C’mon Stan. You don’t want to be grounded forever do you? If you want to ever get ungrounded, you’ll need to make sacrifices. This might be the best deal that you’ll ever get.” Her change in tone is a little confusing since just a couple hours ago, but it sounds like as good of a deal as you can get at this point.
“Let me look at it first” You reluctantly consider the offer. Tricked into a false sense of security by a contract to limit Amy’s power, you consider it may actually be a good idea.
“Just sign this contract here and you can begin working for me while you are here at home. I’m just asking you to be a little more cooperative and you’ll be ungrounded before you know it. We can help each other. It’s a win-win really.” She urges and puts a pen in your hand.
With the pen in hand you slowly begin to sign on the dotted line when Gina says “Hold on now, Stan. Are you sure you are going to agree to all of this? I won’t stop you, but if you agree to something, then you will have to live with the consequences. You’re stuck following the contract and every order, within reason of course. And that goes for you too Amy.” Gina worked in a lawyer’s office and took these matters very seriously. She was one of the underappreciated secretaries that was also studying to pass the bar exam and become a lawyer herself. It was a binding agreement, and she would hold you both accountable for what was agreed upon.
You look a little closer at it and it is a few pages thick full of lawyer lingo that you don’t really understand. She must have gotten it off the internet while she went up to her room. The basic parts pretty much say that you will address Amy as your superior at all times and obey any orders that she gives you… blah blah blah… Fair compensation will start at minimum wage and you gain performance raises/deductions as she decides. Failure to pay or uphold obligations by either party will result in 1 full days’ worth of compensation to the affected party…. Yadda yadda yadda… No alterations shall be made to the contract unless both parties agree. Contractual obligations end when the debt has been paid to all affected parties in the household. It seems pretty straight forward, and although it means you basically are stuck as her servant for a while, at least you will be getting paid fairly for it now. She can’t break the contract either, so at least she can’t work you all day and give you a measly $2 again! Now she owes you at least minimum wage if she tries to pull that crap again. A couple weeks of doing her chores and probably the occasional foot massage but what is the worst that she can make you do? After all this you are off the hook with both her and Gina.
