“Decaf lowfat no foam latte for Kendra!”
Brooke was still amazed at how easily she’d been able to slide into Mikayla’s job. She’d been living in her sister’s body for almost three weeks now and it was starting to feel normal. She was almost starting to forget she had ever been her taller, heavier self.
“I’m gonna take my break now Em.”
Mikayla was sharing a shift with her coworker Emma, an empty-nester in her mid 50s who’d taken a job at the Bean Machine mostly to get out of the house. It was just after 3:30pm and the place was pretty dead, so Brooke whipped herself up an extra-large caramel macchiato that was honestly more caramel and cream than coffee.
Stepping outside into the fresh air, Brooke sat with her drink and felt the waistband of her pants dig into her middle a little more. Why on earth did Mikayla still wear such tight clothes? Putting her pretty pink lips around the large straw on her totally-not-a-milkshake, Brooke took a long pull of the delicious beverage and sighed as the cold liquid flowed down into her middle.
For the first few days she was sure life as Mikayla would suck. Boring coffee shop job, vapid friends to hang out with, just the logistics of keeping each other updated on relevant texts from friends was kind of a nightmare.
But once she’d gotten used to the idea, Brooke was finding she enjoyed being Mikayla more and more every day. She had so much more energy, she had a much easier time chatting up strangers, and she had to admit it was pretty fun going out to clubs and house parties with Mikayla’s friends. Dakota and Madison were a little annoying, but Ashley and Alexis were super fun, and Brooke found herself able to hang out with them surprisingly easily, once she’d gotten a full breakdown on them from her sister.
Sucking down more sugar and dairy, oblivious to the way her tummy and love handles plumped over her waistband, Brooke saw a familiar face walk up to the Bean Machine.
“Hey Liv!” Mikayla called out to Brooke’s BFF, who looked around confused until she saw the pudgy blonde waving from the outdoor seating area.
“Oh hey, Mikayla. I haven’t seen you in awhile.”
Brooke had almost forgotten who she was. This was dangerous ground.
“I’m on break if you wanna hang out for a bit.”
Olivia looked slightly taken aback, she couldn’t remember a time when she’d hung out with Brooke’s bubbly little sister just the two of them. But then, she knew Mikayla was a shameless extrovert, so it wasn’t that surprising.
“Uh, sure. Lemme get my coffee and I’ll join you.”
“Ooo, grab a couple double-chocolate scones for us, tell Emma to put them on my tab.”
Olivia eyed Mikayla and did not miss how her friend’s sister was spilling over the waistband of her shorts and mused that the last thing the younger Wider needed was a double-chocolate anything. But then she noticed the way Mikayla’s pale thighs plumped out of the leg openings of her denim shorts, or how the Bean Machine logo on her uniform shirt clung to some clear quad-boob she was working on, and decided that Mikayla was doing just fine in the BMI department.
“Sure thing, ‘kay.” Olivia disappeared into the shop.
Had Liv been checking her out? Brooke had suspicions about her skinny friend for a few years now. The brunette hadn’t had a boyfriend since high school. But then, Brooke had been too busy with her new job for much dating herself, so maybe she was imagining things. Maybe being Mikayla was starting to get to her…
Brooke shrugged, sending all the spare flesh on Mikayla’s body jiggling, and took another healthy gulp of her sweet, calorie-laden “coffee.”
