Chapter #9

Falling Behind

    by: BeforeTheBubble Author IconMail Icon
Ann and Ryuji sat at a cafe on one of their dates. Usually they were ecstatic to have some alone time together, but this time they felt a little defeated.

sigh That’s the 4th run through mementos where we couldn’t do anything!”

“Look I get I’m the tanky one, but do I seriously need to hold off the frickin reaper every time! That shit he pulled last time still hurts like a bitch! Wait a minute, while I was getting rocked, you’re tellin me you couldn’t do anything either?”

“Everyone we’ve been fighting recently has been resistant or flat out immune to fire! What could I have done? What was I just supposed to just learn Bufudyne on the spot?”

“Could’a helped.”

“Well sorry to say, but what you see is what you get.”

The two of them looked down at their tea and let out a deep sigh. They were falling behind the team and needed to figure something out to catch up. Ryuji slumps onto the table and buries his cheek in his arms. “At this rate we won’t even be useful against enemies we should be bodying…” Ann slapped the table in frustration. “Come on Ryuji! I can’t be the smart one here if you’re not being inspirational.” His posture shifted to him being face first on the table, with his arms sprawled. “groan How can I be inspirational at a time like this… Pretty soon they aren’t gonna need us.”

Ann looked around trying to think of something to cheer her boyfriend on. “C’mon Ryuji. We’re Phantom Thieves! We’re always dealing with impossible odds. Did we ever back down? No! We kept on fighting!” Ryuji began to smile as he started to straighten out his posture. “Dude, that was the most half-assed, cheesiest speech I’ve ever heard! You should definitely leave the inspirational speeches to me.” The two of them shared a laugh at his quip. “Well, it got you perked up, and that’s all I need to get thinking!” She put her fingers to her temples and closed her eyes, trying to think up a plan. “uuuuummmmm… Maybe we could… Oh, I got it! Why don’t we do some extra training in some lower, safer level of mementos! That way we could catch up easy, plus we can make extra cash for revival items so that if the reaper comes for us we can easily bring you back.”

Ryuji got out of his spot to sit next to Ann and gave her a hug. “This is why I love ya. You always know what to do!” Ann hugged him back and nuzzled his cheek. “And that’s why I’m the smart one. Now, I love you too, but let’s hurry and get some training in! The more we sit here the harder it’s going to be to catch up.”

They paid for their tea and made their way to mementos. They started at level one and planed to make their way down until they got to an area at their level. “Hahaaa! I can’t believe we had trouble with these guys! We really have been getting stronger.” Ann gave him a slight disappointed look. “Ryuji, these are literally level one shadows.” He replied with a big smile which made Ann chuckle. “I know, but still. It’s just fun smackin them around. Plus it like puts into perspective how far we’ve come.”

They proceeded down deeper and deeper into mementos until they found an unusual entrance. It was a bright gold staircase leading further down. “Hey what the heck is that.” Ann tried to draw Ryuji’s attention towards it, but he was having some trouble.

huh The heck ya lookin at. You mean the staircase… wait… why is it gold!”

“Ya great directive work there. Still I’ve never seen anything like that before.”

“Let’s go check it out.”

“What!!! Are you crazy!?! What if it’s crawling with reapers or something?”

“Well what if it’s crawling with weak shadows that’ll make us stronger?”

“And what’s the chance of that huh?”

eh Probably like 50/50. I’m willing to take those chances.”

“You’re crazy if you think those are the odds.”

Ryuji grabs her hand and starts leading her to the golden staircase. “Guess I am crazy then! Besides ‘nothing ventured, nothing’… uhh… the other thing. You know what I mean.” Without hesitation or protest, the two of them headed down into the unknown.

When they reached the bottom, they found themselves in a new, very different layer of mementos. It was brighter and fluffier than usual. “What the hell is up with this place?” Ann looked around and felt more relaxed with her decision to follow down. “Ya this isn’t usually what this place looks like.” Ryuji pressed his hand against the wall. “Kinda feels spongy.” He then gave into his first impulse and licked the wall. “eww!!! What the hell made you do that?!?” Ryuji smacked his lips as he enjoyed the flavor. “Relax, I knew what I was doin. It actually tastes like cake.” Puzzled, Ann drags her finger against the wall and has a taste too. “mmmhhh Wow you were right! It does taste like cake!”

As they were investigating the wall, a group of four shadows tries to sneak up in them. Unlucky for them Ryuji has some good perception. He turns around and confronted them. He thought he’d just find some grotesque blobs like they normally see, but they were also somewhat fluffy and colorful like the walls.

“Some weird shadows here too huh.”

“Careful Ryuji, they make look soft but they’re still shadows.”

“I know I know. Let’s beat their ass quick!”
