The Laskar are an unusual race. The can speak Human Standard (as the dominant language of United Humanity is called) without electronic assistance, but it has a trilling sound to it. That is because the Laskar don't have a single mouth.
The Laskar are a semi-aquatic species, similar in nature to Earth's beavers or otters. Their main "trunk", roughly human sized and cylindrical in shape, is covered in soft, white fur, as are the several tentacles extending from the trunk. The trunk itself is featureless. The Laskars have the ability to morph the end of their tentacles to sensory organs, mouths and grasping "implements." When speaking, a single Laskar sounds like a chorus. On land, the Laskar move about in an oddly graceful shuffle.
The mainstay of the Laskar diet is an animal similar to Earth's krill, though they supplement this with various plants and dairy products. Laskar's love Reese's pieces, though to the Laskar metabolism, Reese's pieces are the apex of empty calories.
Even though the Laskars are a gentle and peaceful species, Humanity was at war with them before they even encountered them. This was because of shokushu goukan.
Shokushu goukan is tentacle erotica, usually of a violent sort. The Laskars received an old broadcast of an anime containing shokushu goukan and were universally revolted by it. In addition, since the only permanent orifice the Laskar have on their bodies is the single one they have at the bottom of their trunk for "waste removal," there is a great taboo against public defecation and anal sex. Laskars have weeded out any genetic disposition for this "perversity" from their race.
The Laskars were utterly convinced that the originators of this anime were going to enslave them and force them to become perverts and deviants. When a United Humanity scout ship wandered into Laskar territory, it was immediately fired upon and barely escaped to tell the tale.
It took several weeks of faster than light audio communication to convince the Laskars that humanity wasn't a conglomerate of intergalactic perverts.
Even though the Laskars are a very tactile race among themselves, they are understandably skittish about touching humans. If a Laskar touches a human, it can be seen as a sign of personal trust and a burgeoning friendship.
The story begins with a state dinner held in honor of the arriving United Humanity delegation. Anastasia finds herself seated next to a Laskar male named Akamusi. Akamusi is the third son of one of the three chief leaders of the Laskar. Like Anastasia, he has recently reached adulthood and received the Laskar equivalent of a degree from a university.
