This choice: The child, a girl, looked a lot like Bella, with some of him thrown in - Sally • Go Back... John's eyes widened. A Growl escaped their throat, as they moved with a speed that Argyle was shocked at.
John swung his stick, and Argyle could hear the breaking of bones.
"Get! Your! Hairy! Ass! Away! From! Her!" John bellowed, punctuating each word with a blow. "You! Will! Not! Eat! My! Daughter!"
Argyle's eyes widened, as he looked at the girl. Having frown up on the farm, and occasionally looking after those the older buck had sired, he could see enough of him in her to know that John was her father.
The bear turned with a roar, and attacked John, sending him flying. Again, Argyle heard the breaking of bones.
"Get my daughter out of here," John said, as he stood up, his left arm hanging limp. The bear came after him. He brought the stick up. "Bring it on!"
Argyle ran, and reached the tree. "Jump!"
The child jumped, and Argyle caught her. He started running, hoping that John would make it.
Soon enough, they were at the farm's gates.
"What's going on?" Robert asked, as he opened it.
"There was a bear," said Argyle. "It was after the girl, John went after it, claiming that she's his daughter. Told me to take her back here. Said she's a Guest."
"A bear?" Robert asked.
"Yes."
"And just when I was thinking about opening the gate to let the herd out to enjoy the view past the fence," said Robert. He looked at the girl. "What's your name?"
The girl kept quiet.
"Shy, or afraid," said Robert. "I get it." He looked back at the house. "Might be time." He dashed inside the house. A moment later, he dashed back out, with a hunting gun, running outside the gate.
"What's going on?" Julia asked, as she, Hanna, James, and the human slave Jeffery came up.
"There was a bear after the girl," said Argyle, his breath coming back. "John seems to think that she's his daughter."
"Argyle, where's John at?" Julia asked.
Argyle looked out into the woods. "Either alive, and dying, or dead, and bear food. Maybe just more injured, if he's lucky." He looked at the girl. "John says to tell you that she's a Guest."
Julia looked at the girl. "I can see the resemblance," she said. She walked over, and got down on one knee. "It's alright," she said, as she carefully placed her hand on the girl's shoulder. "You're safe here."
The girl looked past the fence, as James and Hanna closed it, along with Jeffery. "Do you think he's dead?"
"John's a tough human, and my husband's just as tough," said Julia. "No bear can take them." She gave the girl a gentle lick on the cheek. The girl was indeed John's. "What's you name?" she asked, softly.
"Sally," the girl said, just as soft. "I was looking for some early greens when I got lost, and then the bear came after me." She looked at Julia. "Who's the one that started hitting the bear?"
"John Wrangler," said Julia.
"That's my Herd name," said Sally. "He called me his daughter. Who is he?"
"He's your father," said Julia.
It was then that everyone heard the gunshots.
"I hope they both make it back." indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
