My name is Renee Cauldron; a 14 year old witch in training. My mom had been teaching me at home during the evening hours while my 13 year old brother, Jon was sleeping in the room across the hall. Dad, a renowned archaeologist, was not a magick user, and was always away for weeks or even months at a time, on one of his expeditions. We did not mind; he always brought back some fascinating 'this' or 'that' for us to have. Some mom kept due to having a bad feeling about them and we never saw the items again. I had been reading ahead in the magick book, hoping to impress and please mom with a quickly learned spell or enchantment after the lesson was over for the night. I had just reached a chapter on gender spells and decided to try it out on mom's cat, Whiskers who was an old grumpy male. He somehow knew how to open all of the doors and had waltzed into my bedroom; he froze as he saw me holding the magick book.
I grinned. "Hey, Whiskers... I've got a surprise for you!"
I spoke the incantation and fired the spell at Whiskers. Only, to my surprise, he jumped out of the way with speed I was not expecting, and the spell flew right out my door into Jon's room! Jaw dropped, I turned to Whiskers, who turned silently away with his tail up in the air as he slowly walked out of my room. To say I had panicked was an understatement. I dropped the magick book and charged into Jon's room to find everything changed.
I could not believe my eyes. "It was just a simple gender spell!"
A voice from behind startled me. "Was it, now?"
I spun around to find mom closing the door to Jon's room from behind the door. Even in the dark, I could tell she was far from impressed with me. I stammered, trying to think of anything to explain what had happened only mom stopped me.
"What was the first lesson I taught you?"
I gulped. "There are no shortcuts to magick."
Mom nodded. "Exactly; can you tell me why now?"
I shuddered; I knew I was in trouble. "Because too many things could go wrong."
Again mom nodded, motioning to my brother, now sister, sleeping in a canopy bed. "The spell you used was simple as you had guessed but, had you read further, you would have understood that genetics play a big role in witchcraft."
I winced. "Meaning... ?"
Mom sighed, giving me a look of disapproval. "By changing Jon into a girl, you placed her onto my side of the family! She is a witch now, just like you and I!"
I took the chance to make things better with a slight grin. "Is that so bad? We can teach her magick."
Mom scowled, forcing me to cringe. "Would you care to explain to your father that he no longer has a son to take out on adventures with him when he reaches adulthood? Would you like to explain to your new little sister that she now has powers she can barely understand, let alone control?"
I was shaking at this part. "Sorry... It was an accident."
Mom grunted. "You should have said that from the very beginning, young lady. This is a big magickal mess and you will be cleaning it up."
I gulped. "How?"
Mom cracked a grin that looked more like a snake looking down at a mouse. "You will be teaching... Jess how to be a proper teenage girl by the end of the summer. Once that is done, I will be teaching her magick until she is on your level where you will pick up where you left off."
Tears began to well in my eyes; I knew what this meant. "No more lessons... ?"
Mom shook her head. "Not until you clean up the mess you made with your impatience to learn magick."
