“Sure you can ask,” replied Fats, laughing. “And I even know, since I weighed in yesterday. But officially I can’t tell you - the headmaster will announce my weight tonight at the welcoming feast, along with that of all the other prefects, including Tor here, and until then it’s a secret.
“Is it..over 500 pounds?” asked Matt, barely containing his eagerness to know.
“Oh yeah!” replied Fats. “500 pounds hardly gets you into Prefect status these days.” Fats back off a step or two, and then said to Matt. “Go see the office for some school clothes, and then we’ll see you at supper. Unless you take ol’ Potts up on his offer - in which case we may see you in the cafeteria when we drop by for a ‘snack’” Fats turned away from Matt and took a couple of steps towards an open door whose frosted glass panel had “Prefects’ Lounge” engraved in it. He stopped before the door and stepped up onto a small wheeled platform sitting beside the door. Fats grabbed a control hand and the wheeled platform began to move down the hallway.
“What’s that?” Matt asked in surprise.
“A Segway,” replied Fats, stopping beside him. “The school issues them to all Prefects. It saves me a lot of work hauling this great big bod!” He grinned again and his massive smile bunched his two thick, plump cheeks and lit up his fat face. “It gets tiring, hauling this much weight around all day, especially when you’ve got to do rounds.”
“Cool!” said Matt. “How fast will it go?”
“Well, theoretically nine miles per hour, but it’s a little slower when it’s hauling my bulk around!”
“The other great thing about these,” added Tor, having mounted his own Segway and rolling up beside Fats, “is that they really help our weight gain - after all, Fats and I don’t have to burn off any calories walking anymore!”
