They stopped and sat down on a fallen tree. Isabelle sat with her knees on her legs, her chin resting on her hands, and her eyes closed. Daniel had his hands on either side of him on the log, his head leaning back, and his eyes to the sky. Both merely sat there, content, for not, to rest and listen to their surroundings.

"Rest little ones. You will need it for all you will soon face. Without even knowing it, you will do my bidding and hand your precious kingdom to me. Straight into my hands I will direct your path, and there is nothing you can do about it," a cloaked figure watches their every move in a swirling cloud of mist in a cold, dark, and damp room a long distance away.

"I just don't know what happened. I fell asleep under the tree, how did I end up at home? What happened to my father?" Daniel appeared to be speaking to the sky.
"Perhaps you were sleepwalking," Isabelle opened her eyes and turned to look at Daniel, "but you did nothing wrong. We will learn the truth of what has past. You need not fear. Do you remember when we fooled the physicians? You complained of lost time, spinning, itching, and several other symptoms. Laying in bed and moaning, mud and smashed berries on your face and body, and the physicians unable to determine what ailed you. I would sit by your bed concerned, and when they left the room, the laughs we had."
"Eventually they told our parents that I would not last long." Daniel smiled, still gazing toward the heavens. "How wonderful it was to see their surprise when one morning I walked ouside perfectly healthy and we went to play."
"Such fun we had."
"We still have a lot of fun."
"But not nearly as much. My parents always have me attend all those balls and banquets, and you have much more responsibilities than before."
"Do not fret Isabelle. We will make time for fun." Isabelle joined Daniel in looking at the sky and imagining shapes and figures in the clouds. A few moments had passed when a sound was heard in the meadow on the other side or the road. It sounded familiar, but neither was sure of what it was. They rose and carefully made their way into the meadow.
"What do you suppose it is Daniel."
"I do not know. It does not sound menacing. I know I have heard that sound before." Their pace slowed as they before searching to ground for the source of the noise. Suddenly Daniel stopped and stared at something before his feet. Seeing this, Isabelle joined him at his side.
"Why, it's a baby."
"I can see that Daniel, and he's crying. Don't just stand there staring, pick him up."
"But-"
"It's just a baby Daniel, he won't hurt you." Daniel kneeled and took the baby in his arms. He was wrapped in a blanket, and Isabelle saw a piece of paper sticking out of the folds. She grabbed the paper and read the messege.
"Please care for and love this child. He is alone in this world. His name is Gregory." indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
