Gyan had snuck out of his bedroom window to find a place where he could play his violin in peace. His parents never liked it when he played it in the house. They always complained about the noise. Presently, he sat inside a small cave. Certainly, it was a bit chilly, but he was sheltered from the pouring rain and, as long as he had his fiddle, he was perfectly happy.
It was during a brief pause in his playing that he heard the voices. Two women were arguing.
"We can't leave here," said one, who sounded like she was crying, or had been very recently.
"Like hell we can't," the other spat. "I was supposed to be alone at that cabin. You showing up was annoying enough. Then this one just wanders in like she owns the place and passes out. My cabin is not the freakin' Holiday Inn."
"But it's freezing out---"
"She won't notice, she's unconscious."
The voices trailed off. As soon as Gyan thought it was safe, he ventured out to see what had happened. Lying on the ground, soaked and still as death, was a young female. In the distance was a cabin, presumably where the voices had gone to. How could they just dump her like this, he asked himself. I must do something.
Gyan placed his fiddle down gently and went over to the girl. He knelt beside her, unsure of what to do. Suddenly, she sputtered and sat up. Gyan jumped back in surprise.
"Please, help me," she choked out.
Gyan was shaken, but he couldn't refuse. He helped her up and over to the cave.
"Thank you," she said, still shivering, but clearly grateful. "My name's Melody."
"I'm Gyan," he said, smiling. It felt good to help someone.
"I'm very sick," said Melody. "I've got a fever."
Gyan again could not refuse to help. "I'll go see if I can find someone."
