The 17-year-old had not only shrunk himself to the pathetic size of half an inch tall, but had somehow caused a weird metamorphosis with his half-baked formula to the effect he was now buzzing around his own living room as a tiny fly.
Matt settled on the vertical living room wall while he tried to think rationally about his transformation.
The most likely explanation, he decided, was that at some stage his shrinking formula had been contaminated. Perhaps a fly had stumbled into the formula, mixing its DNA with the powerful ingredients.
The possibility presented a new host of problems. Would his antidote, still on hand in his basement lab, restore his size along with his human form?
While Matt pondered, his sister and her friends prepared to leave for lunch at their favorite fast food restaurant.
Although he felt tempted to follow them, he nixed the idea. His time might be better spent finding a way back into his basement laboratory.
Although he used the stairwell inside the house to access his lab, Matt speculated on some possible avenues of entry.
An old stairwell from the outside of the house also accessed the storage area of the basement. Dusty and littered with old cobwebs, that deep pit might be his best opportunity.
If that failed, several screened vents were located along the upper walls of the basement. Could he squeeze his tiny fly body through one of the screens?
Both options depended on getting outside the house and seeking to regain entry to his basement.
The girls, looking like giants, were on the move.
Matt knew he lacked the luxury of time. Should he fly out the front door when they left or would it be more sensible to stay in his current location?
