Mr. Smith had never felt lower in his entire life.
What had he expected? His entire plan had been a mad scheme from the start. He realized that now that it was too late to turn back.
For the moment, thoughts of his plan to ship himself to California for a visit with his nephew was the farthest thing from his mind.
Crouched in the dubious security between two of Tommy's titanic toes, the tiny professor's one hope now rested with simply surviving long enough to gain his teenaged neighbor's attention and assistance. The bug-sized scientist huddled in the wide crevice between Tommy's big toe and its nearest neighbor.
Those toes, he realized with a shiver that chilled his teeny body to its core, could easily reduce him to an unrecognizable pulp.
His mind rebelled at that prospect. Despite being a quarter of an inch tall, he was still a man. He had no intention of suffering the fate of a mere insect, casually crushed without a though by a careless titan.
His situation might have been less humiliating if not for the irritating stench of sweat and toe jam that assaulted his senses. "Doesn't Tommy wash his feet?" Tiny Bryan choked aloud.

This task for Mr. Smith beat mowing yards and pulling weeds. In fact, Tommy could barely believe his good fortune. As soon as he dropped the package into the mail at a post office, which wasn't even crowded, he began to dream of ways to spend the money.
He had no idea that a flea-sized man had hitched a desperate ride on his rubber sandal in the space between two of his toes.
Tommy considered heading to a nearby park, where he could kick back, relax, enjoy wading at the edge of the small lake.
He also wondered if it might not be better to call a few of his buddies and have them meet him at their favorite pool hall for a game of billiards. He felt lucky and maybe he could bankroll his payment from Mr. Smith into an even bigger amount of money.
