When the tiny scientist opened his eyes, he felt pain lance through his body as if someone had stabbed a sharp needle through his skull.
He groaned, struggling into a sitting position on the kitchen tiles. He remembered having accomplished his objective of taking refuge aboard Tommy's gigantic sandal. His hiding spot between two enormous toes, however, hadn't prevented him from being catapaulted into space when his titanic neighbor merely took a few steps across the floor. He remembered being thrown forward, screaming, to slam into a wall.
He groaned again, realizing that after all his valiant effort, his achievement had been erased in the blink of an eye. The little man staggered as he got to his feet, cradling his face in his hands when the enormous room began spinning.
Suddenly, he felt the floor tremble, making him even more unsteady on his feet.
"What the..." The bug-sized scientist's question never got asked as the colossal exterminator returned to the kitchen, the enormous container of toxins strapped to his shoulder.
He felt sick in the pit of his stomach as he stared upward at the terrifying young man and flashed back to the conversation between Diego and Tommy that he had overheard.
Diego's statement about the toxin not leaving any bugs standing played back in the horrified little man's brain.
His bid to escape the house on Tommy's sandal had failed, and now the huge exterminator was ready to rain down a fog of chemicals on him.
Actually, for the moment, Diego was more interested in a snack and a drink.He had spent the past hour spraying in every likely hiding place where bugs might take shelter. He felt he deserved a break.
As he made a surrepitious raid on Mr. Smith's fridge, he had no idea that his actions were being witessed.
The giant's unexpected actions caused the tiny man to rejoice. Unstrapping the tank of bug spray, Diego let it slam to the floor. The impact knocked tiny Mr. Smith off his feet again, but he didn't mind. The giant continued to rummage through the fridge, even removing ingredients to make himself a sandwich.
"This is my chance!" The little man said aloud.
