Bryan stopped dead in his tracks. Hideous and large the persistent spider peered out from the safety of the cardboard crate.
The spider cautiously poked a long, pointed leg out, as if to test the stability of the ground. More legs appeared from the dark gap, and Bryan felt the eight-eyed beast return his stares.
Seeing the spider in the light again reminded the shrunken man just how horrifying it truly was. He backed away, his knees threatening to buckle, his body trembling with fear. Bryan had forgotten all about the opening of the front door, but heavy vibrating reminded him.
"SWEET!" Thundered a familiar voice. "THE PACKAGE!"
The surface of the desk shuddered heavily as the humongous student approached. Bryan chose to ignore the emerging spider, turning to gape at his nephew who approached with booming steps. "He-... He's freaking enormous!" Squeaked the reduced scientist.
Zack was in fact more than just "enormous." To bug-sized Bryan, his nephew's size was near unfathomable as it towered over the desk surface. Bryan continued his dumb-struck stare, looking up towards his nephew's moon-sized face, currently showing an expression of excitement. Minute details of his gigantic nephew's appearance stood out immediately to him: light stubble coated his jaw like an alien forest. Zack's godly physique looked more impressive than ever as it filled out his grey university hoodie. Bryan could even see a cut, barely an inch long, under his nephew's chin.
Bryan had never expected his first encounter to be such a wonder.
Unaware of his tiny slack-jawed audience, Zack reached a huge arm over the desk towards the small package. The spell of awe broke too late for Bryan as he realized his folly. "Wait Zack! I'm supposed to be in there! Wait for me!"
Huge building-like fingers wrapped around the box and lifted it off the desk with remarkable ease. Zack failed to notice the tiny tear or the small spider that made a quick descent from the moving box via silk strand. It landed with a thump, all eight eyes locked onto the tiny man.
Sensing his danger, Bryan looked at the monstrous arachnid in horror. His fearful screeching of the spider's quick approach was suddenly interrupted.
---
Zack smiled looking at his own address written on the box in his Uncle's clean writing. Lack-luster in weight, Zack's mind still raced with thoughts of what might be inside.
He had been notified by Bryan of the packages existence. Ever since he was a small child, Zack had been showered with girfts from his Uncle. All of them containing something of great value more often than not. The car his Uncle Bryan had purchased him recently was good evidence of that.
Quick movement caught the college student's notice. He squinted at the desk. "Gross, a spider!"
Heavily laden backpack in one arm, Zack raised the cardboard box with his other hand. The small arachnid halted its flight, sensing Zack's intent, and suddenly reversed direction.
"Got'cha!" Zack slammed the box down with a hard thwack and a twist. He lifted it to inspect the remains. "What the-... Where did it go?"
The clever spider hurriedly fled back towards the pile of other boxes, vanishing from sight. Zack grunted, resisting the temptation of pursuit. It was just a dumb tiny spider after all.
