Bella spat and snickered, thinking of the superheroines "out here," who could now do precious little to stop her.
It had been two years since the system had betrayed her. In that time, the world had become a very strange place indeed.
It seemed that there had been a "fat plague"--a mysterious epidemic affecting only women and--at least in its initial stages--highly contagious. It had ravaged the world, beginning nearly as soon as Bella had been put in prison. Women who were infected had found themselves doubling and tripling their body weight in mere hours (or, in less extreme cases, mere weeks). Superheroines, for some reason, were particularly vulnerable to it. All that, of course, had been in the outside, where the government could do little to regulate the lives of free citizens, among whom the virus spread (thanks in no small part to the malice and envy of formerly-beautiful-turned-suddenly-obese women) quickly among the ranks of the most attractive girls.
Prison, however, was a different story. Here, control could be maintained, and all prisoners infected with the disease were kept well away from other prisoners--with the result that Bella was possibly the last beautiful woman and (former) superheroine to keep her figure. And she intended to use that to her advantage.
Now, not only were men--and superheroes--reduced to near-immobility in her presence; women would be quite unable to stop her as well. She pictured her former svelte, health freak roommate, Felicity--Blur--weighing perhaps three hundred pounds, now, huffing and puffing as she tried to catch Bella after this or that theft. Stopping for donuts.
Bella took off her glove (she kept her entire body other than her face covered in order to prevent infection) and used her fingertip to open a search engine on her computer (which she had bought, along with an apartment, days before). She could essentially take anything from anywhere now, and the only women who would have been able to stop her were, by this time, immensely fat.
