About This Newsletter

*Fire* Hiya readers. I am happy to be your guest editor for this edition! Recently I began watching the tv series of "The Wheel of Time" and it inspired me to check out the author, Robert Jordan!

Quotes from Robert Jordan
"Fantasy is an area where it is possible to talk about right and wrong, good and evil, with a straight face. In mainstream fiction and even in a good deal of mystery, these things are presented as simply two sides of the same coin. Never really more than a matter of where you happen to be standing."

"You have to have talent to some extent — I certainly hope I have talent — but you have to have luck as well. Once you get that first shot, that will get you noticed for the rest of your books and that will give the rest of your books a better chance."

"If you use the words people expect, they grow bored. A great ballad needs to be unexpected.
Never be expected."

Letter from the editor

Recently I began watching the tv series based on the "Wheel of Time" by Robert Jordan. I had read a couple of his books but then got busy and never went back to them. LOL As some readers say they were long books. So I thought I would learn something about this world famous author.

Robert Jordan, born James Oliver Rigney Jr. was born in Charleston. South Carolina in October 1948. He attended Clemson University but dropped out and joined the army within a year. He was a helicopter gunner in Vietnam and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, The bronze star and two Gallantry crosses. In 1970 he studied physics and earned a Bachelor of Science degree and worked as a nuclear engineer in the Navy.

He enjoyed history, hunting, fishing, sailing,, poker, chess, pool, and collected pipes! He lived with his wife Harriet McDougal, who works as a book editor. She is also his editor. *Smile*

He taught himself to read and four and wanted to write like Jules Verne! His wife and he worked closely together as he wrote the books. She said that when he was recovering in the vet hospital, he read a lot and then decided he could write better than what he had been reading. So in 1977 he began sharing his gift.

He was one of the writers of the Conan the Barbarian novels and wrote a historical fiction, a western and a dance criticism under different names. He is best known for his Wheel of Time series of 14 books! He had originally thought the series would be 4 books. He published Conan series between 1982 and 1984 and published his first Wheel Of Time book in 1990. He also wrote under his name, The Warrior of Altarii, written in the 1970's. It was his first novel at 98,000 words and he wrote it in 13 days. It was not published until 2019, after is death though It had been sent to publishers. Readers say it foreshadows his famous series.

In March 2006 he was diagnosed with cardiac amyloidosis and died in 2007. Though he hoped to beat this illness and live a long and creative life, during his illness he made all kinds of notes for his three last books in the Wheel of Time Series. He dictated more to his assistance and worked mostly on the last book. He knew he would have to get another author to complete the series. After he died, his wife had to find someone to write the rest of the work, which she would edit. After reading his book Mistborn, the Final Empire, her choice was Brandon Sanderson, who said he was honoured and rather nervous and almost turned it down. As Robert's work had been an inspiration through his growing years and feeling that perhaps some one else might mess it up, he accepted the challenge. He had a lot of material to work with and then had to fill in the backgrounds where needed.

Brandon Anderson feels that The Wheel of Time was the first new fantasy going beyond the Tolkien type of fantasy, adding much cultural depth into the worlds with evolving character arcs including having strong woman heroes. It was a great influence on his own writing. He calls him a trail blazer, creating a way for future works like "Game of Thrones" and his own creations!

Many in the field agree he was quite an influence on the fantasy genre.

George R.R.Martin once said: "He gave me a blurb when my series was starting out, an endorsement for the cover that got me a lot of readers. His own work really made my series possible. Jordan essentially broke the trilogy template that Tolkien helped set up. He showed us how to do a book that’s bigger than a trilogy. I don’t think my series would’ve been possible without The Wheel of Time being as successful as it was. I’ve always wanted to sprawl, and Jordan, to a great extent, made that possible with his series." Apparently the two authors were great friends and Martin said Jordan was a great support.

Peter V Brett said, "he was a giant of fiction whose words helped a whole generation of fantasy writers, including myself, find their true voices."

Patrick Rothfuss, {The Kingkiller Chronicle} "Anyone who's writing epic or secondary world fantasy knows Robert Jordan isn't part of the landscape, he is a monolith within the landscape."

What do you think? Have you read Robert Jordan's work? Have you picked up a few pointers or inspirations?

I am looking forward to reading more of his work now I have more time! *Smile*

Thanks for reading.
