Hi, I'm JACE .
Welcome to this issue of the Noticing Newbies newsletter. Join me as I take you into some nooks and crannies of Writing.Com that you may not have found time to check out yet.
Don't forget to toss me a note about what you liked or didn't like in my column, or about a topic you'd like to see discussed. This newsletter is about and for you. And for you seasoned members, I hope you'll find something you can take from my ramblings.

If you joined Writing.Com since 1 Sept 2024, you've ushered in the beginning of the site's 25th year. That is a long time for an internet organization to survive. I've personally been involved with half a dozen organizations that no longer exist on the web. (Uh, I'm pretty sure my participation in them did not cause their demise. )
For some perspective, two French empires (the French called them Republics) of the 19th Century (Napoleon Bonaparte--ten years, and Napoleon III--19 years) lasted less time than WDC. Even in the US, the party in power seldom lasts more than 25 years. Not to be morbid, but at best you may live to be 100, just four times WDC's current longevity.
WDC is a dynamic site with changes and additions to the many features being made regularly. Some are major updates that include such things as the site's Reference Guide (see "Writing.Com 101" ). Other changes are relatively minor tweaks that happen often because a member makes a suggestion (see "Suggestion Box" ), or the StoryMaster needs to accommodate a browser change.
Whatever the case, WDC is always changing ... and I submit that's a good thing. No matter your reasons for joining, rest assured WDC will never become stagnant.
I expect most of you reading this newsletter were writing before you joined WDC. Perhaps a friend told you about WDC and invite3d you to join. Maybe you stumbled on the site. Or, did you use a search engine for a writing site as an outlet for your creative urges?
I'm curious.
So I've created a short Survey about how you came to be here. I hope you'll take a few minutes to complete it. For every fourth Survey I receive by Email date/time stamp, I will send that member a WDC Encourager merit badge.

Thanks for spending time with me today. At the bottom of every newsletter is a section entitled:
followed by a text box. If you liked what you read (or if you didn't), please take time and drop me a line. I'd love to hear your ideas.
From the mailbag:
From tracker : Congratulations for another newsletter well done! I like the way you left links to seek more information. It gives new members the chance to get used to using resources like Writing.Com 101. I loved the Newsfeed quotes. It was neat to see how people gain gift points. I think I will send an MB to someone "just because" tonight!
I appreciate your encouragement.
From the Newsfeed:
From Aster : I use them to request reviews! I'm always looking for honest feedback
From oldgreywolf on wheels : Every so often, I donate a bunch (anonomously).
A very worthwhile use.
From Amethyst Angel 🍁🙏 : Hoarding 'em for renewals and swapping awards and MBs under different circumstances.
From D. Reed Whittaker : Primarily to reward reviews. I have rewarded contest hosts, but not recently. Haven't been winning enough contests.
From theOCCowgirl : I share with the artists who have reviewed me....and those I review...
From The King Pen : I use them for reviews and those who review my work.
From Dave : Renew membership, credit reviews, donate to special groups/causes.
From Ned : I use GPs to renew my membership, so I really enjoy WDC birthday week when they accumulate more quickly.
From Mousewitch : I use them to participate in the various contests and activities here.
From Anna Marie Carlson : I share them with members, and use them to pay for my membership, donate to contests, and to help celebrate a birthday, anniversary, etc.
Admirable uses.
From Bob : I give them away to budding writers who stimulate my mind.
I like that sentiment.
From Ichabod Crane : Buy Ice Cream.
We need a store like that here.
