Letter from the editor

Writing.Com is home to just over 100,000 members. Some have paid memberships. But the membership rolls are populated by those with Free memberships ... by far.

I'm a numbers guy--statistics always fascinate me. Here are a few numbers by member levels:

Staff - (Red cases): 5
Senior Moderators - (Purple cases): 6
Moderators - (Blue cases): 66
Memorialized Authors - (White cases): 44
Preferred Authors - (Yellow cases): 437
Registered Authors - (Black cases): 100,609 *

* Obviously this number varies from day to day because of members joining and leaving. And this does not include Registered Users (Grey cases) who did not show on the Authors page.

My point is that while site changes are announced by the Staff, getting the word out to everyone requires the help of both the members and the forums created to help members on a daily basis.

After posting your first Static Item (story or poem) to your Port, the next thing you should learn is how to bookmark Favorites. These bookmarked items can be persons, forums, groups, books, blogs--pretty much anything.

Starting out you may not want to bookmark everything you come across. Keeping the number of items small makes them easy to manage and follow. Personally, I have more than 200 items bookmarked in 17 folders all stored safely in my Favorites. (Yes, I do need to delete older, unused Favorites.) You can find your Favorites at the top right side of each page. Favorites will be listed with the most recent edited item at the top of the list.

Clicking on FAVORITES (right column) will open saved items in a separate, easily accessible window. All your favorites will be listed under a Main folder. If you have created other Folders for your favorites, they'll be listed after the Main folder. You can easily change the order of your folder by following instructions at the bottom of the Favorites window.

Following the word FAVORITES are a few greyed icons. Clicking the first icon will update your Favorites list. The next icon (a clock) toggles between displaying the site's official time (based on Eastern Standard) and hiding the time. Most contests use this time to determine by what time an entry should be posted.

If you have a Premium or higher membership you may see an icon of two chain links. This is available if you created Custom Links as part of your Port. Finally, you'll see either *GreaterThan**GreaterThan* or *LessThan**LessThan*. The first will hide the right column thereby making your main screen larger; the second will open the column to view.

For specific information about favorites, check out "My Favorites and FansOpen in new Window..

The first place you should visit each time you log on, is THE HUB. You won't be able to favorite this; find it by clicking on the Writing.Com link in the upper left corner.

So, what items should you include in your Favorites as a minimum? I suggest you start with these.

Most site updates are first listed here:

I won't explain each one--I believe they speak for themselves.

Finally, there are so many more forums, groups and authors that you may find helpful on your journey here. Add them as you like. Generally, as members are promoted, they are afforded access to individual forums where they may interact with others at their level. Bookmarking those forums saves time searching for them later.

There is no limit to the number of favorites you can have. But like filling up your Port with items, be careful that you don't overload it so you can't find something you need. Best of luck as you navigate Writing.Com.

Ask & Answer

Thanks for spending time with me today. At the bottom of every newsletter is a section entitled:

*Bullet* *Bullet* *Bullet* Don't Be Shy! Write Into This Newsletter! *Bullet* *Bullet* *Bullet*

followed by a text box. If you liked what you read (or if you didn't), please take time and drop me a line. I'd love to hear your ideas.

From the Newsfeed:

From HollisFrances Author Icon: I'm staying.

From N.A Miller Author Icon: 2 years here and I am staying too...

Thanks for adding to the potpourri that is the WDC membership. *thumbsups*

From Dave Ryan Author Icon: Not sure. 2024's been a bit of a damp squib compared to the previous year. I'll play it by ear for a while yet to see if my muse finally comes back from whatever extended holiday the lazy little sod's been on.

From Jayne Author Icon: Dave Ryan Author Icon - It took a year for mine to return. I'm glad I stuck it out.

Although, I have no idea how it's been seven years since I joined. I clearly have no concept of time, so maybe my muse was gone for 4 years, and I'm straight-up lying to you. I have no way to tell. *Laugh*

From Tannus Author Icon: 2007 for me. WDC has been a small part, but at times a big part of fixing my past and overcoming some rough patches.

         Agreed!

From Humble Poet PNG Author Icon: I'm a surprisingly community minded individual and I tend to throw myself fully and whole-heartedly into everything I do. It is my humble intent to endeavour to be as much an asset to this writing community as I can, and to be so for as long as I can.

Thanks. And we look forward to seeing you around the site.

From TheBusmanPoet Author Icon: As long as I keep waking up, I'm not going anywhere. 😎👍

From GrandpaJim Author Icon: I love writing.com. It has endured the test of time. I enjoy being reviewed & reviewing for good or bad. Like many I am a thoughtful and kind reviewer. If you want to be published, SUBMIT your writing to publishers. What do you have to lose but prepare for rewrites editors publish for their audience not all audiences.

Writing.com has given me a chance to express and display my writing thoughts and feelings. No one can take that away from me. Even though I have only been published once at my funeral a book will be created so all can enjoy.

Thank you Writing.com & the STORY MISTRESS & STORY MASTER: you gave me a place to store my writing other than boxes I carried everywhere. THANK YOU!!!

Well said ... both of you.
