Community Recognition

Everyone starts with one Community Recognition that is bestowed the moment a new member joins the site. The Welcome Merit Badge lets newcomers know that they are part of this place from the word go. Those "first" Merit Badges keep coming with every new "first." The first item posted to a portfolio garners a new Merit Badge, which equals one more point of Community Recognition. The first review sent, the first newsfeed post, and more add up to a whopping nine points just for poking around the site and finding out how to use all of its nooks and crannies.

These first nine badges (and all other Achievement Merit Badges) can be found in My Achievements  . Or from the left sidebar. To see which ones you have and which ones you still need, start on

Even with moderate involvement, there are rewards for interacting within the community. The Consistency Achievements are a collection of five Merit Badges that will be delivered after seven consecutive days of doing a certain site task. Those have no limits on how many times they can be earned. If a member logs on every single day for a whole year, they will have 52 Visit Merit Badges.
The same is true for seven days of reviewing, seven days of posting on the Newsfeed, seven days of posting in a forum, seven days of posting to a blog or commenting on a blog post, and seven days of sending reviews.

The beauty of the seven day Achievement Badges is that they are a reward for showing up within the community. There are no judges, no higher or lower prizes. It's about taking part, interacting, seeing and being seen. Why, besides those Merit Badges should anyone want to do all of that?

Because the more someone interacts with the community, the more they become known. This helps to get more reviews. get more writing feedback, make new friends from around the world, earn the respect of the peers here.

And also, in its simplest form: because it's fun.

Are you being recognized in the community?
